Business & self-employment

Get a tax account

In order to pay City taxes, you need a Philadelphia Tax Identification Number (PHTIN).

You also need a PHTIN to get a Commercial Activity License (CAL), which is required to do any business in Philadelphia.

Nonprofits aren’t liable for the Business Income and Receipts Tax (BIRT), but they may owe other taxes. For example, nonprofits with employees must get a PHTIN and pay the Wage Tax.

Get a Philadelphia Tax Identification Number (PHTIN)

You can register yourself or your business as a new taxpayer on the Philadelphia Tax Center.

You can use this account to pay:

  • Earnings Tax (employees)
  • Hotel Tax
  • Liquor Tax
  • Mechanical Amusement Tax
  • Net Profits Tax

  • Parking Tax
  • Philadelphia Beverage Tax
  • School Income Tax
  • Tobacco Tax
  • Use and Occupancy Tax
  • Valet Parking Tax

  • Wage Tax (employers)

If you can’t apply online, you can use a paper application for a business tax account instead. You can also use the same form to apply for a Commercial Activity License (CAL) and Wage Tax withholding account.
