Compliance deadlines

These are deadlines to comply with the citywide Building Energy Performance Program.

Owners of large, non-residential buildings are required to submit tune-up reports, plans, and certifications every five years. The compliance schedule is based on the size of the building. For example, buildings over 200,000 square feet submitted reports for the first time in 2021 and will have to again in 2026, 2031, and so forth.

Buildings began complying with the program according to this schedule:

  • Buildings over 200,000 sq. ft. in 2021.
  • Buildings between 100,000 and 200,000 sq. ft. in 2022.
  • Buildings between 70,000 and 100,000 sq. ft. in 2023.
  • Buildings between 50,000 and 70,000 sq. ft. in 2024.

If you’ve missed a compliance deadline, you still need to submit a report or certification.


2024

September 30, 2024

  • Tune-up specialists submitting 2024 reports must be certified by this date.
2025

There are no compliance deadlines this year.

2026

January 3, 2026

  • Updated alternative compliance plans for large portfolios are due.

April 4, 2026

  • Deadline for certifying high performance, requesting an alternative exemption, and making extension requests for buildings over 200,000 sq. ft.

September 30, 2026

  • Tune-up report deadline for buildings over 200,000 sq. ft.
  • Tune-up specialists submitting 2026 reports must be certified by this date.
2027

January 4, 2027

  • Updated alternative compliance plans for large portfolios are due.

April 3, 2027

  • Deadline for certifying high performance, requesting an alternative exemption, and making extension requests for 100,000–200,000 sq. ft. buildings.

September 30, 2027

  • Tune-up report deadline for 100,000–200,000 sq. ft. buildings.
  • Tune-up specialists submitting 2027 reports must be certified by this date.
2028

January 4, 2028

  • Updated alternative compliance plans for large portfolios are due.

April 3, 2028

  • Deadline for certifying high performance, requesting an alternative exemption, and making extension requests for 70,000–100,000 sq. ft. buildings.

September 30, 2028

  • Tune-up report deadline for 70,000–100,000 sq. ft. buildings.
  • Tune-up specialists submitting 2028 reports must be certified by this date.

January 4, 2029

  • Updated alternative compliance plans for large portfolios are due.

April 3, 2029

  • Deadline for certifying high performance, requesting an alternative exemption, and making extension requests for 50,000–70,000 sq. ft. buildings.

There are no compliance deadlines this year.
