(Philadelphia, August 5, 2016) – Mayor Jim Kenney and Commerce Director Harold T. Epps announced today that Philadelphia’s unemployment rate decreased to 6.9%, the lowest unemployment rate for the month of June since 2007.
“During the first six months of my Administration, we have worked tirelessly to ensure that Philadelphians in all neighborhoods can be part of the amazing growth and prosperity taking place in our city,” said Mayor Jim Kenney. “I am thrilled that more than 5,000 additional Philadelphians are at work now as compared to January, and I am confident that we can keep that trend going.”
According to preliminary data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics for June 2016:
- There are 696,200 jobs in Philadelphia, an increase of more than 15,000 from June 2015 and the most jobs the city has maintained during the month of June in the past decade.
- Jobs were added in the following industries: construction, information, financial activities, and leisure and hospitality.
- 49,209 Philadelphians remain unemployed, down from 49,989 in May 2016. This is the lowest number of unemployed people for the month of June since 2008.
- Philadelphia’s unemployment rate decreased from 7% in May 2016 to 6.9% in June 2016.
“The latest employment data is an encouraging sign that we are on the right track in Philadelphia,” said Commerce Director Harold T. Epps. “The Department of Commerce will continue to aid in the creation of new jobs and economic opportunities for our residents by supporting the growth of existing businesses, attracting new companies, and undertaking new developments throughout the city.”
