Last week, our office released a report,”PHLpreK by the numbers,” highlighting the status of PHLpreK, the City’s new quality pre-K program funded by the Philadelphia Beverage Tax. As of March 24th, 1,870 of the 1,996 available slots were filled, and that number is growing!

The numbers show that not only are children and families benefiting from expanded quality pre-K, but early childhood education (ECE) providers and teachers are benefiting as well.

To date, 251 new jobs have been created by PHLpreK, with some positions still available. PHLpreK providers have also been able to increase their number of classrooms, hire new teachers, raise wages, and improve their quality rating.

“I’m so proud of the success PHLpreK has had so far,” said Mayor Kenney.  “Last year at this time, expanded quality pre-K for Philadelphia’s children was an ambitious goal shared by many stakeholders. Today, 1870 children are attending quality pre-K at 88 programs throughout the city. This is a shared effort between my Administration, City Council, PHMC, UAC, the School District, a dedicated Pre-K Advisory Board, the philanthropic community, and dozens of pre-K providers. We have a great deal more to accomplish, but we’re off to a good start.”
