On Friday, Mayor Kenney continued his weekly visits to Philadelphia public schools by stopping by Penrose Elementary School! Upon arrival at the Southwest Philadelphia school, second-grade students greeted Mayor Kenney with loud cheers, welcome signs and an impressive performance by the school’s drill team.

Following the performance, Mayor Kenney shook hands, answered questions, and posed for photos with students and teachers throughout the hallways.

After posing for a photo with the drill team, Mayor Kenney accepted a stack of handwritten letters from an eighth-grade class, which included suggestions for improving the school.

The next stop on his school tour was to a kindergarten classroom that was learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, in honor of the holiday. Mayor Kenney told the students the best way to honor Dr. King is to “get a good education.”

Mayor Kenney then headed to a classroom that was in the middle of a vocabulary lesson. One of the vocabulary words that the students learned (and demonstrated) was “squint.” Mayor Kenney jumped right in and participated in the vocabulary demonstration!

The last stop on Mayor Kenney’s visit of Penrose Elementary School was an art classroom, where third-graders were writing “Get well soon” letters for Officer Jesse Hartnett. Mayor Kenney admired their letters, and thanked the students for making them for our heroic Officer as he begins the recovery process.
