President of Mongolia Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj Visits Philadelphia
President Elbegdorj traveled to Philadelphia for a day-long visit, following the completion of his work at the United Nations General Assembly, and just before returning home to Mongolia. This marks a rare visit by a democratically elected leader of a crucial U.S. ally to the City of Philadelphia. The invitation from the Philadelphia Orchestra and its’ president and CEO, Allison Vulgamore provided an opportunity for Mayor Kenney to formally proclaim Friday September 23rd, “Mongolia – Philadelphia Friendship Day”.
Many members of the Philadelphia orchestra, the business community and locally elected and appointed officials, came to greet President Elbegdorj. He was however, most delighted to meet and speak with Philadelphia’s oldest living Mongolian, who at the age of 101, reminisced of her old land and spoke with the president in her native tongue.
“Philadelphia is a world-class city, rich in culture and bustling with creativity. With our recent designation as the Nation’s first UNESCO World Heritage City, the host of the historic 2016 Democratic National Convention, and the 2015 Papal Visit during World Meeting of Families – the global spotlight continues to shine on the City of Brotherly Love,” said Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney. “We are proud to have The Philadelphia Orchestra serve as ambassadors of our City during their annual international tour and are honored to welcome President Elbegdorj and the Mongolian delegation to Philadelphia. This visit marks a significant moment in cross-cultural affairs and demonstrates Philadelphia’s role as a global destination.”
In 2017, Mongolia will celebrate its 30th year of official bilateral, diplomatic relations with the United States. This close relationship has grown and expanded over the last three decades, and Mongolian officials often refer to the U.S. as Mongolia’s “third neighbor.” Mongolia currently sustains one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, boasting an 11% increase in GDP (Gross Domestic Product) last year. It is successfully attracting outside interest from businesses headquartered in many of the world’s most sophisticated democratic nations.
