In one of her first acts as City Representative, Sheila joined the City’s Chief Education Officer Otis Hackney to deliver homemade artwork and get-well cards for Officer Jesse Hartnett to Lt. Greg Doerr of the 18th Police District in West Philadelphia, where Officer Hartnett is assigned. On Friday, January 22, students from six Philadelphia public schools created the artistic pieces for Police Officer Hartnett, who showed extreme bravery when he was seriously injured in a recent on-duty altercation. Coincidentally, the delivery took place on the day Officer Hartnett was released from Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries.
The 300+ cards and pieces of artwork expressed heartfelt sentiments by students representing William Bryant, Andrew Hamilton and Boys Latin Charter schools in West Philly; the Penrose Elementary School in Southwest Philadelphia and the Cook-Wissahickon and AMY-Northwest schools in Roxborough, where Officer Hartnett is a resident. The projects included inspiring messages, well wishes and original illustrations.
The initiative was a collaboration between the Office of City Representative and the City’s Education Office, with a focus on Mayor Jim Kenney’s priorities of youth, education and community-police engagement.
