On Friday, December 2, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., representatives from nearly two dozen municipal agencies will be on hand to talk to the general public about current job opportunities at the City of Philadelphia.
The Hire Me Phila.gov Career Fair, sponsored by the Human Resources and Talent Unit in the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, will include information on how to access job listings as well as the City’s hiring process. “Many people don’t realize that the City is the second largest employer in southeastern Pennsylvania,” explained Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Jackie Linton. “The career fair will be a great chance for residents to learn about the scope of job opportunities that the City offers.”
Representatives from Police, Fire, Prisons, the Free Library, Parks and Recreation, Licenses and Inspections, Water, Streets, the Airport, Public Health, the Office of Innovation and Technology, Revenue, Fleet Management, Public Property, and Law are scheduled to attend.
“Unfortunately, many applicants for City employment only hear of civil service opportunities through word of mouth or because they know somebody who is already a City employee and knows how the system works,” added Managing Director Mike DiBerardinis. “There’s certainly a need to better publicize these opportunities to a broader, more diverse audience — including minorities and returning citizens — and this career fair supports that goal.”
The event supports the Kenney Administration’s workforce development initiatives aimed at making the City’s workforce more diverse and reflective of Philadelphia as a whole; that effort includes expanded recruitment efforts to fill entry level civil service jobs so, eventually, those candidates can work their way up into managerial positions.
“This isn’t just about landing a job,” added Mayor Jim Kenney, “it’s about finding a new and rewarding career. And, by meeting folks who work in these departments, participants will learn about how exciting a career in public service can be.”
The event is free and open to the public but registration is required. Attendees may register online or at the door on the day of the event.
