48th & 47th Streets Traffic Safety & Complete Streets Project

Overview

This page contains information about the 48th/47th Streets Traffic Safety & Complete Streets Project. The project area is 48th Street from Market St to Kingsessing Ave and 47th Street from Chestnut St to Paschall Ave. The project goals are to address the high rate of traffic crashes and install traffic calming measures on each street.

  • 47th Street from Chestnut Street to Paschall Avenue sees a high number of crashes, and is on the City’s Vision Zero High Injury Network (HIN), which is the 12% of streets in Philadelphia that experience 80% of all traffic deaths and serious injuries.
  • 48th Street from Market Street to Kingsessing Avenue is excessively wide and has also seen many crashes. The street was repaved in 2023 and will be fully restriped in 2024 with a layout reflects safety conditions and feedback from the community groups.
  • Three public open houses occurred Fall of 2023 and Winter of 2023/2024.
  • Traffic calming measures considered for the corridors include but are not limited to painted corner areas, speed tables, traffic signal to stop sign conversion, all-way stop sign conversion, and separated bike lanes.
