30th Street Viaduct Rehabilitation Project

The 30th Street Viaduct was built in 1930, located between Walnut and Market Streets, excluding Chestnut Street. The Viaduct carries upper 30th Street over lower 30th Street. The Viaduct is comprised of a concrete deck on concrete encased steel stringers, which frame into steel floorbeams supported by steel columns.

This Department of Streets rehabilitation project will:

  • Remove existing concrete deck and sidewalks in all spans and construct new precast concrete deck and cast-in-place concrete sidewalks.
  • Replace existing steel stringers in all spans.
  • Repair existing steel floorbeams, columns, and gusset plates. Clean and paint all steel to remain.
  • Improve drainage and street lighting along lower 30th Street.
  • Install a two-way cycle track along the west curbline of upper 30th Street.

Traffic will be detoured for upper 30th Street while local access is maintained for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles, for critical property access points while the Streets Department rehabilitates the Viaduct. One lane of through-traffic will remain open along lower 30th Street during construction.
