MUSIC PROJECT SPECIALIST
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is specialized music work providing notation services and performing hand-copying of orchestral scores and instrumental parts from original sources or copies. An employee in this class oversees music copying projects submitted by composers for inclusion of materials in a library music collection and for circulation of parts and scores to orchestras and other music organizations.
A significant aspect of the work involves contact with composers and representatives of music organizations requesting copying services. Work is performed under the supervision of a music curator.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Contacts musical organizations and composers to establish copying project timetables, charges, and special considerations;
determines number of freelance copyists from a list maintained by the music curator; assigns parts to and determines progress of
copyist; proofreads and corrects finished work; assembles project and oversees reproduction and shipping.
- Hand-copies individual instrumental parts from the conductor's score or previously extracted parts on a matrix, supplying
notation omitted from the original score; assembles a conductor's score from individual instrumental parts and copies it by hand on
a matrix.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- musical notation, instrumentation, orchestration and transposition.
- the principles, methods and techniques of copying orchestral and vocal music by hand.
- the elements of music such as harmony, melody, rhythm and musical nomenclature.
SKILL IN:
ABILITY TO:
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with composers, music organizations and freelance workers.
- do neat and accurate hand-copying of orchestral and vocal works.
- proofread music and detect and correct inaccuracies and errors.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 8/1986.)
- Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college, university or conservatory of music with major course
work in music.
- One year experience in providing music notation services to orchestral organizations.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department that has included the specific experience described above.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
