MUSEUM REGISTRAR
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is museum work cataloging and registering museum objects and maintaining records of materials loaned to and by the museum.
Work is performed under the supervision of a museum curator. Assignments are stable in nature and are performed in accordance with standard museum practices and general work instructions. The employee's cataloging and record maintenance activities constitute a service to curators by providing them with records of all objects used in museum exhibits.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Catalogs items in the permanent museum collection as well as those items on loan for temporary exhibit; indicates on catalog cards such information as name and origin of object, number of objects,
techniques and materials used, general description dimensions, and location.
- Examines shipments of items for temporary display; notes their condition upon receipt; reviews shipping manifest to learn insured values of items; prepares periodic reports to insurance agent indicating value of exhibits housed at the museum.
- Prepares labels for museum objects using inventory lists and catalogs as guides; works with museum staff to display and label items for exhibit.
- Maintains records of objects loaned by the museum; works with the museum staff to prepare small exhibits to be loaned for educational purposes; maintains a register of new museum acquisitions.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- library and research techniques in relations to the identification and cataloging of museum objects.
- literature and research sources in the fields of material cultural and local history.
ABILITY TO:
- learn the methods and techniques used in cataloging museum objects.
- learn the source and use of research material and literature available for use in the identification and description of museum objects.
- exercise judgement and discretion in screening difficult objects requiring identification by appropriate consultants.
- maintain records and prepare reports.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with curators, consultants, and the public.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. - Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university with major course work in history, social sciences, fine or applied arts, or a related field.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to physically perform the duties and work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
