GENERAL DEFINITION
This is specialized recreation work of limited scope and difficulty teaching recreation activities for groups of children or adults. An employee in this class instructs and organizes recreation activities for groups in the area of specialization. Work includes planning and scheduling recreation activities with others, and motivating groups in the area of specialization. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher level administrative or recreational supervisor.

Position must perform specialized recreation work of limited scope and difficulty teaching recreation activities for groups of children or adults in the area of specialization.
Position must instruct and organize recreation activities for groups in the area of specialization, plan and schedule recreation activities with others, and motivate groups in the area of specialization.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Depending on individual proficiency and interest evinced by participant groups, an employee may teach one or more of the following skills within the area of specialization:
ARTS AND CRAFTS SPECIALTY
Instructs and organizes such activities as painting, drawing, sketching, ceramics, pottery making, craft making, photography, or wood working; plans and schedules activities with others; encourages participation in the program.
ATHLETICS SPECIALTY
Instructs and organizes such activities as boxing, gymnastics, physical fitness, and track and field; plans and schedules activities with others; encourages participation in the program.
CHILD CARE AIDE SPECIALTY
Instructs and organizes such activities as child care and school homework; may organize other activities such as summer day camp, and arts and crafts; serves and cleans up after meals, and assists with personal care services; plans and schedules activities with others; encourages participation in the program; prepares and maintains records and reports on activities, behavior, and medical information for assigned youth.
DANCING SPECIALTY
Instructs and organizes such activities as folk dancing, square dancing, or ballroom dancing; leads individuals and groups in such activities; plans and schedules activities with others; encourages participation in the program.
DRAMATICS SPECIALTY
Instructs and organizes such activities as puppetry and pantomimes, little theater groups, drama tournaments or informal readings; may organize other activities such as drama competitions, chess tournaments and other talent competitions; plans and schedules activities with others; encourages participation in the program.
MUSIC SPECIALTY
Instructs and organizes such activities as chorus, group singing, quartets or band; plans and schedules activities with others; encourages participation in the program.
SEWING SPECIALTY
Instructs and organizes such activities as sewing, appliques, weaving, needlepoint, pattern reading and embroidery; plans and schedules activities with others; encourages participation in the program.
ALL SPECIALTIES
Trains and rehearses recreation and social groups for exhibits, festivals or shows; organizes and conducts competitions and related activities.
Prepares course material for exhibitions, festivals or shows; organizes and conducts competitions and related activities.
May plan field trips and accompany participants on such trips; may perform work at other sites.
Prepares course material for presentation to groups of varying age levels, backgrounds and interests; assists in the preparation of publicity for scheduled classes.
Prepares records and reports on attendance, attitude and progress of recreation activities.
Determines types and amounts of needed supplies for various types of projects; orders materials and supplies.
Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

the sources of information and literature in the area of specialization

SKILL IN:
the techniques applied in activities in the area of specialization
ABILITY TO:
organize, instruct and motivate individuals and groups, and maintain order among recreation and social groups
maintain effective working relationships with participants, associates and the general public
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 11/22.)
EDUCATION:
Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
CHILD CARE AIDE SPECIALTY
Two years of full-time paid experience caring for and supervising children in a child care center, school location, recreation facility, or social service agency.
OTHER SPECIALTIES:
Two years of full-time paid experience conducting and/or instructing classes or groups of adults in the area of specialization.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
Successful screening for TB and Hepatitis is required for the Child Care Aide specialty.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
CHILD CARE AIDE SPECIALTY:
For DHS positions only, completion of a CPR and a First Aid program and possession of a current CPR and First Aid certification is required within six months of appointment and during tenure of employment as a Recreation Specialty Instructor (Child Care Aide).
Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance, Pennsylvania State Criminal History Clearance and FBI Fingerprinting Clearance are required prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Recreation Specialty Instructor (Child Care Aide).
