MURAL ARTS DIRECTOR
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is administrative public art work directing the Mural Arts Program for the Recreation Department. The employee in this class is responsible for directing the design and creation of murals throughout the city, for overseeing an art education program, and directing fund raising initiatives. The employee in this class supervises full-time and part-time artists, laborers, and art teachers. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with departmental personnel, community groups, and art institutions, and coordinating available private and public resources is important in the work. The employee in this class reports to an administrative superior.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)
- The position in this class must be responsible for directing the Mural Arts Program for the Recreation Department.
- Only one position will be allocated to this class.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Plans, directs, and coordinates the creation of murals city-wide; receives and reviews requests for murals; approves and prioritizes requests; maintains database of mural requests and information regarding murals completed and in progress; determines content and location of murals; interviews artists for mural projects; maintains database of artists in the region; may participate in the design and painting of murals.
- Oversees the program's advisory board; participates on various committees and community groups relating to mural arts and art education.
- Plans, coordinates and evaluates the departmental sponsored art education classes; determines staff and equipment needs; designs curriculum.
- Seeks corporate and private funding for programs; prepares grant proposals and artists' contracts; publicizes and promotes programs; explains programs and departmental philosophy to interested participants and sponsors.
- Prepares estimated budget and submits it to supervisor for review and approval; orders supplies; interviews and hires staff.
- Performs related work a required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the principles, methods, and techniques of mural painting.
- the principles of art education.
- computer hardware and software relating to work assignment.
- the methods and techniques of organizing and implementing programs in the area of mural arts and art education.
- the equipment and supplies required to conduct programs in the area of mural arts and art education.
ABILITY TO:
- plan, develop, direct, and evaluate programs in the area of mural arts and art education.
- coordinate city, community and private resources to produce a comprehensive program in the area of mural arts and art education to serve community needs.
- train and supervise a small staff engaged in conducting and/or coordinating mural art and art education programs.
- utilize computer hardware and software relating to work assignment.
- express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
- develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, departmental staff, community groups and volunteers, representatives of private agencies, and the general public.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 4/1999.)
EDUCATION
- Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university with major course work in fine arts, art administration, or art education.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE
- Three years of experience in art administration or art education.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE
- Two years of public art experience directing an art organization and developing art education programs.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to and during tenure of employment in this class, if required by work assignment.
