PARK RECREATION DISTRICT SUPERVISOR
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is supervisory and participatory park recreation work planning, conducting and coordinating the athletic, aquatic, cultural and theatrical programs conducted within a specified major geographical park recreation area. Employees in this class supervise recreational, clerical and maintenance employees.
The determination of community recreation needs, the promotion of recreation activities, and the development and maintenance of volunteers are significant aspects of the work.
Work is performed under the direction of a technical superior.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)
- An employee in this class must plan, conduct, and coordinate the various recreational activities within the four major geographical park recreation areas (Central, Northeast, Northwest, South-Southwest).
- These positions must work in Fairmount Park's Recreation Division.
- There will be four positions allocated to this class.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Plans, coordinates and evaluates, through subordinate supervisors and volunteers, the events,
sports and other recreational activities conducted within the assigned major geographical area; meets with
subordinate supervisors and volunteers to discuss, determine and assign program schedules; tours facilities
to ensure programs are functioning effectively and efficiently; ensures the facilities and ground are
maintained.
- Conducts and/or attends meetings to discuss community and staffing needs, current and future
programs, and problems; recommends and implements courses of action; organizes and meets with
councils and groups functioning as liaison between the communities and the facilities.
- Prepares and maintains permits for use of park facilities and grounds within an assigned area;
supervises the issuance, use, care and return of recreation supplies and equipment; inspects facilities and
grounds to determine if additional maintenance and/or custodial work is needed; inspects and insures cleanliness and compliance and safety standards.
- Prepares and maintains records of requisitions, repairs, permits, and a variety of other documents; requisitions supplies; prepares reports on activities, accomplishments, and special events.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the philosophy and objectives of organized recreation.
- group leadership as applicable to a large and varied park recreation program.
- principles, practices, techniques and methods of organization, program planning and scheduling and techniques of community group relations.
- local community, civic and social organizations and other resources for volunteer workers.
- principles and practices of public speaking.
- equipment and supplies required to conduct recreation activities.
- aquatic, athletic, cultural, and theatrical activities.
- the principles and practices of first aid.
ABILITY TO:
- plan, develop, direct, and evaluate a variety of recreation programs and activities.
- coordinate resources, staff and volunteers to produce comprehensive and varied programs.
- train, supervise and evaluate staff and volunteers in conducting and/or coordinating park recreation programs.
- express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
- develop and maintain effective working relationships with recreation staff, community groups and volunteers and the general public.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 9/1993.)
- EDUCATION
Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university in the field of recreation or physical education or completion of a four year course at an accredited school of art, music, drama or dancing.
AND
- GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Four years of recreation experience.
AND
- SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE
Two years of recreation experience which has involved responsibilities for the planning and organizing of a complete and varied recreation program within Fairmount Park.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department that has included the specific experience described above.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Park Recreation District Supervisor.
