WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR I

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

            This is water safety instructional and recreational work.  Employees in this class teach patrons of various ages and abilities, including the physically and mentally handicapped, in the skills and techniques necessary for safe swimming, lifeguarding,  and other water recreational activities.  Work in this class involves some disagreeable aspects and light physical effort.  Work is performed under the supervision of a technical superior.

 

ALLOCATING FACTORS:(The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)

 

•The position must be located in Fairmount Park or Recreation Department.

 

•The employee must teach swimming, lifeguarding and water safety to patron of all ages and abilities.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

            Instructs patrons of all ages and levels of ability, including the physically and mentally handicapped, in swimming, diving and skills necessary for safe aquatic recreation;  awards certificates for completion of all levels of American Red Cross swimming instruction;  offers and renders advice and assistance when requested.

 

            Maintains order and discipline at pool;  observes and enforces safety precautions.

 

            Rescues swimmers when necessary; administers CPR, artificial respiration and other first aid.

 

            Prepares application forms and flyers to announce proposed courses; maintains records of participation for team and individual swimming progress.

 

            Makes chlorine and Ph tests, correcting chlorine content in pool when necessary.

 

            Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

•water rescue methods and techniques.

•the principles, practices and techniques of instructing groups and individuals including the physically and mentally handicapped, in swimming and diving, from beginning through advanced levels.

•the techniques of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

•first aid techniques and procedures.

 

SKILL IN:

 

•performing lifesaving and first aid.

•performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

 

ABILITY TO:

 

•exercise tact and judgment in maintaining order and discipline, and enforcing pool regulations.

•establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, participants and the public.

•perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE  (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 11/85.)

 

EDUCATION

 

            Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.

 

AND

 

EXPERIENCE

 

            Two seasons of lifeguard experience which has involved responsibility for instructing others in the arts of swimming and diving.

            Or any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

            Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

 

            Possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's Certificate, a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Instructor's Certificate, and a current certification required for lifeguarding including First Aid and CPR, at the time of application and during tenure of employment as Water Safety Instructor I.
