ASSISTANT RECREATION LEADER

(Bilingual)

(General)

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

            This is participatory Parks and Recreation work teaching and leading cultural, environmental or athletic activities at a recreation facility.  The employee performs recreational services for participants at centers, playgrounds, gym facilities of nearby schools, and in park areas.  Work includes issuing equipment and supplies and supervising games and sports.  Work differs from the higher level classes by the absence of supervision over departmental personnel and lesser responsibility for program administration.  Duties require evening and week-end work. Employees allocated to this class typically work year round on a part-time basis. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher level recreation leader.

 

ALLOCATING FACTORS:  (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)

 

1.    Positions in this class must teach and lead cultural, environmental or athletic activities at a recreation facility.

2.    Positions must be located in the Department of Parks and Recreation.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

BOTH SPECIALTIES

 

            Under the supervision of a higher level recreation leader or district manager, organizes, coaches, leads, and instructs groups in athletic activities such as flag football, basketball, softball, and soccer; and in cultural activities such as arts and crafts, drama and dance; conducts sport clinics.

            Supervises gymnasium, indoor and outdoor activities; participates in special events.

            Supervises game room activities and organizes tournaments; teaches new games and rules; maintains discipline.

            Issues supplies, equipment, and facility permits; prepares incident reports, registration forms, work order requests, and other types of paperwork.

            Attends staff and community meetings; establishes and maintains contact with community, civic, school, religious and social groups; keeps advised of community interests and events; serves on committees for district and city-wide recreation events; inspects playground and buildings to supervise the proper use and care of recreation supplies, equipment and facilities; performs limited caretaker work and minor maintenance and repairs such as mopping and sweeping floors, changing light bulbs, and re-marking fields.

            May assign work to summer employees and volunteers.

            Performs related work as required.

 

BILINGUAL SPECIALTY

 

              Performs the duties shown above with members of a non-English language-speaking community.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

·         the philosophy and objectives of organized recreation

·         group leadership as applied to recreational programs

·         equipment and supplies required to conduct recreation activities

·         athletic, cultural, environmental and social recreational activities.

 

ABILITY TO:

 

·         establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants, associates and community members

·         to learn the principles and practices of first aid and CPR and administer them effectively

·         organize, teach and lead people of any age group in a variety of recreational and cultural activities after completion of a departmental training course

·         exercise tact and judgment in maintaining good sportsmanship of participants in recreational activities

·         learn departmental rules and regulations pertaining to recreational techniques and methods.

 

BILINGUAL SPECIALTY

 

              Ability to understand and speak the designated non-English language fluently and clearly.

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE  (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 6/18.)

 

BOTH SPECIALTIES

 

Option 1:

 

EDUCATION:

 

                        Completion of thirty (30) credits of course work at an accredited college or university.

 

AND

 

EXPERIENCE:

           

            Completion of the equivalent of three months of full-time paid experience leading participants in recreation sports leagues, day camps, aquatics, or other organized recreational, environmental or cultural activities. 

 

NOTE:            Completion of an additional thirty (30) credits of education as described above may be substituted for the experience requirement.

 

OR

 

Option 2:

 

EDUCATION: 

 

            Completion of the twelfth school grade.

 

AND

 

EXPERIENCE:

 

            Completion of the equivalent of six seasons (6 months per season) of Recreational Specialty Instructor experience leading participants in organized recreational activities for the Department of Parks and Recreation.

           

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT FOR THE BILINGUAL SPECIALTY

 

               Sufficient training and/or experience to be able to converse effectively in the designated non-English language.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

            Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
