SEASONAL PLAY LEADER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is general recreation work leading previously planned recreational activities at playgrounds, day camps, recreation centers and other facilities on a temporary, seasonal basis. Stimulating interest in constructive recreation activities among patrons is a significant aspect of the work.
Work is performed under the supervision of a higher level recreation leader.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)
- Employees must perform general recreation work leading previously planned recreational activities at playgrounds, day camps, recreation centers and other facilities on a temporary, seasonal basis.
- Positions must be located in Recreation or Fairmount Park.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Organizes, instructs and leads groups in recreational activities such as sports, games, music, dramatics, dancing, arts and crafts; organizes groups into team play, marks off playing field; issues participants necessary materials and equipment; interprets rules of games when required, ascertains that equipment is properly used and returned.
- Supervises free play activity at slides, swings and other apparatus in order to maintain
order and prevent accidents.
- Trains and rehearses groups for local and city-wide competition, exhibits, festivals and shows; accompanies groups on visits to city museums and similar facilities.
- Administers minor first aid as necessary.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the following activities: sports, games, music, dramatics, dancing, arts and crafts, story-telling.
- the objectives of public recreation.
- the principles and methods of administering first aid.
ABILITY TO:
- organize, instruct and stimulate groups of people in assigned recreational activities.
- participate in activities such as sports, games, music, dramatics, dancing, arts and crafts, and storytelling.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and patrons of various age groups, backgrounds and interests.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 2/1972.)
- Education equivalent to the completion of one year of college.
Or any equivalent combination of acceptable experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
