LIFEGUARD TRAINEE
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is recreation work safeguarding and assisting in the instruction of participants in activities at a municipal swimming pool. The employees in this class participate in training programs designed to qualify them for promoting to the Lifeguard I class. Employees are hired on a temporary basis during the summer season and may be required to work during one of two shifts.
Lifeguard Trainees work at all times under the on-site supervision of a qualified lifeguard. Work may require significant physical exertion and exposure to extreme heat.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- After proper certification, maintains surveillance of the shallow - up to five (5) feet- areas of a pool and surrounding areas; helps ensure order and adherence to safety regulations.
- Upon direction when necessary, rescues bathers in distress with an equipment rescue or a non-swimming rescue.
- Administers water resuscitation and/or rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation when warranted after successful completion of in-house training.
- Administers pool-side first aid when appropriate after completion of an in-house training course.
- Tactfully enforces established pool usage rules.
- Provides assistance to higher level aquatic staff giving swimming lessons.
- Attends ongoing aquatic in-service training for preparation to enter the Lifeguard I class.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
SKILL IN:
- swimming to swim 25 yards in under 25 seconds.
- diving to enter the water from a long, shallow dive.
ABILITY TO:
- learn shallow water rescue methods and techniques.
- learn first aid principles, techniques and procedures.
- learn swim strokes, lifesaving, and first aid.
- pool usage rules and regulations.
- exercise tact in maintaining order and discipline and enforcing pool regulations.
- tread water.
- follow oral and written instructions.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Education equivalent to completion of the tenth school grade.
NOTE: Prior to appointment, all Lifeguard Trainee applicants will be required to attend and successfully complete a screening, training, and certification session conducted by Department of Recreation staff. Applicants must demonstrate ability to swim 25 yards in under 25 seconds, enter pool from a long, shallow dive, and tread water for 30 seconds.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Age - Must have reached sixteenth (16) birthday by date of appointment.
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
