POOL EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is routine work maintaining the proper chlorine and pH levels in Fairmount Park swimming pools. Employees are responsible for the operation of the chlorinating and filtration systems. Work assignments are seasonal and on an assigned shift basis.
Work is performed under the close supervision of a skilled tradesmen. Assignments are limited in nature and are performed in accordance with detailed instructions. Work requires light physical effort and potential contact with dangerous chemicals.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Starts filter pumps each morning; tests pool water to determine amount of chlorine and soda ash that has to be added to pool to achieve proper pH and chlorine levels; adjusts chlorinating machine and adds soda ash to water tanks; observes chlorinating machine pressure gauges to ensure that water and chlorine are being mixed and fed to pools according to prescribed proportions; tests pool water hourly to ensure that chlorine and pH levels are maintained; makes adjustments as necessary.
- Disconnects and removes empty chlorine tanks to storage area; reconnects full tanks and checks lines for gas leaks; replaces faulty washers on gas lines; starts feeding process.
- Observes the level of water in pool; opens and closes water valve to increase or decrease the amount of water in the pool.
- Observes water pressure gauge on filter pumps to ensure proper flow; opens and closes water valves to increase or decrease the flow of water through filters.
- Backwashes filters to clean the system.
- Keeps work area clear of unauthorized personnel.
- Removes metal grates and cleans gutter lines.
- Completes daily and weekly reports.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
ABILITY TO:
- learn the operation of swimming pool pumping, filtering, chlorinating and related equipment.
- learn to read and interpret chemical tests and mechanical gauges.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- prepare written reports.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.)
- Completion of one year at an accredited college or university.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department that has included the specific experience described above.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
