LIBRARY COORDINATOR
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is specialized library work in a municipal library system providing materials selection, staff training, community relations, program development, program evaluation and similar services. Employees in this class advise and assist librarians in various program areas and facilities to carry out the municipal library system's services. Work is performed under the general direction of a higher level library supervisor. Contact with library personnel and representatives of outside organizations to promote services and assist in accomplishing program goals is a major aspect of the work.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)
•Must provide advisory services and assistance to library personnel:
in a regional area of the library system,
or performing a statewide outreach function for the Library of Accessible Media for Pennsylvanians (LAMP) program ,
or as an assistant to a higher level librarian for a city-wide service such as materials selection.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Contacts community leaders, schools, and community and business organizations to promote library services and determine community needs; attends meetings and gives program and library service information to various groups; plans and conducts program activities; promotes use of library through exhibits, talks, bibliographies, booklists and group activities outside the library; evaluates services of branch libraries in the area of community activities.
Plans and organizes orientation and on-the-job training programs and oversees activities of librarians in branches in the areas of book selection, program activities, preparation of booklists and community activities; acquaints new branch library personnel with the community surrounding the branch they serve; visits branches to evaluate services, collection maintenance and programs; recommends changes in services and collection to meet community needs.
Reviews and evaluates library material orders selected for use in branch libraries; recommends titles for inclusion in replacement lists for branch and regional collections; works with branch and regional staff in weeding collections; directs exchange of excess materials among library agencies; conducts meetings with librarians to select materials offered for agency purchase; chairs library materials and selection committees.
Evaluates work performance and training received of librarians in branches; assists with resolving problems; holds follow-up conferences with individual librarians to evaluate training received and needed.
Evaluates material collection, material selection, weeding of collection, and community contacts in area of specialization when necessary; promotes use of library facilities and determines community needs with community agencies, schools, etc.; plans and conducts program activities; trains library personnel on book selection techniques; trains library personnel on book selection techniques; provides reference and reader advisory services as needed.
Assists library supervisors and administrators by ordering library materials for new branches, preparing lists for New Book Review meetings, overseeing the compilation and typing of new book orders, monthly checklists, outstanding order cards and other lists, preparing books for meetings and ordering, reading and writing reviews of new books, presenting book reviews, branches and examining and assigning permanent loan books.
Prepares narrative and statistical reports.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
•the philosophy and objectives of public library service and its relationship to the community.
•the organization and resources of the municipal library system.
•public speaking techniques as they apply to promotion of library services to the community.
•literature, reference materials, publishers and periodicals.
•the methods of gathering and evaluating information to determine community needs in relation to library resources.
•the methods of disseminating information about library services.
ABILITY TO:

•establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, library patrons and community representatives.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 9/73.)
EDUCATION
Possession of a fifth year degree from an accredited school of library science.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Two years of librarian experience in a large library system.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE
One year of librarian experience at the full performance level in a large library system.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources that has included the specific experience and possession of the degree identified above as an educational minimum.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania within three months of appointment and during tenure of employment for positions in the Library for Accessible Media for Pennsylvanians (LAMP) assignment.
