LIBRARY TRAINEE
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is library work in a training capacity developing knowledges and skills in the field of library science and, as part of the training program, performing a variety of assignments throughout a municipal library system. An employee's entrance, within time limits specified by the department, in an approved program leading to a master's degree in library science or a closely related field and continued enrollment and attendance in the program are significant to the work. Work is performed under the close supervision of a higher-level librarian. Employees in this class perform a variety of librarian duties as part of their training in library science.
ALLOCATING FACTORS (The following conditions must be met in order for positions to be allocated to this class):
1. Employees must be enrolled in a degree program commensurate with the requirements of the targeted occupation.
2. Employees must acquire their master's degree within three years of appointment to this
class.
3. Positions must be located in the Free Library of Philadelphia.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
As part of a training program to develop knowledge and skills in the principles, practices, objectives and techniques of library science, reads text books, book reviews, library magazines, manuals, departmental regulations and related materials, and in a training capacity performs a variety of library tasks such as:
Explaining the general arrangement and resources of the library and use of library facilities; assisting readers to locate library materials; furnishing information about books, authors, and reference materials.
Compiling bibliographies and booklists.
Assisting in conducting children's story hours; presenting book talks.
Assisting in conducting library programs for patrons such as film programs.
Cataloging books; processing books, periodicals and other materials into the collections; making additions to or corrections in data base material.
Visiting school and school librarians to foster use of the library.
Reviewing and evaluating books; choosing library materials for inclusion in agency collections; removing worn and obsolete materials from the collections.
Assisting in planning for agency service.
Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 2/23.)
EDUCATION:
Current enrollment in or acceptance to a master’s degree program accredited by the American Library Association with
major coursework in Library Sciences, Library Information Sciences, or a closely related field.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
