GENERAL DEFINITION

 

            This is library patron service and support work assisting the public with the circulation and borrowing process, location of library materials and readily accessible factual information, and library material receipt and preparation.  Employees perform a variety of duties in connection with the shelving, arrangement, repair, sorting, dispatching and filing of library materials, including the use of keyboard or other data entry devices to access and input stored information via computer terminals. Employees may learn to provide assistance to and orient library patrons in the access of public computers, laptops, tablets, e-readers and other technological resources that support and deliver library services, programs and materials. Employees in this class may also be assigned to perform clerical work associated with cataloging and acquisitions functions in the library.  Employees work under the close supervision of a higher-level Library Assistant or a Librarian.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

BOTH SPECIALTIES

 

            Welcomes and directs patrons entering the library; charges and discharges library materials; calculates, collects and records fines for overdue library materials using library cash handling information system; registers new patrons; gives information regarding the location of materials; demonstrates the use of catalogs and guides; assists librarians with community programs.

            Arranges library materials in Dewey Decimal order; prepares books for the bindery; prepares and produces reports; uses computer terminals for data entry and retrieval; performs a variety of material processing procedures such as searching, ownership stamping and bar coding.

            Sorts and files special materials; clips newspaper articles for subject collections.

            Makes minor repairs on books; ties books into bundles and labels returned books belonging to other library agencies.

            Performs paper and computer file record searches for bibliographic identification and matching of patron records using the library services platform; inputs and edits computer file agency records; makes corrections, additions, and deletions in on-line systems.

            Learns to assists library patrons in accessing library services on computers and personal mobile devices.

            Stamps or labels library identification marks on materials; affixes book plates and pockets to end papers, covers or containers.

            Places plastic jackets on books, cuts jackets to size, sorts books by size; rolls books on assembly line casters.

            Locates books, periodicals, newspapers, and records and other unbound material or shelves and delivers them by lift, conveyor belt or on foot; replaces material on shelves according to a predetermined arrangement; shifts books from one location to another; checks shelves periodically for proper order of materials.

            Checks books against file for those on reserve; examines library materials for damage.

            Performs related work as required.

 

BILINGUAL SPECIALTY

 

            Performs the duties shown above with members of a foreign language speaking community.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

·         English usage, punctuation, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary

·         the operation of standard office equipment including computer software packages used for word processing and database management

·         electronic library resources

 

ABILITY TO:

 

·         understand and follow oral and written instructions

·         learn library rules, regulations, and procedures

·         learn routine clerical procedures and the organization of library material

·         learn and perform a variety of routine material processing tasks relative to the maintenance of a collection of books and related materials

·         learn to enter and retrieve data with the use of a keyboard on computer terminals

·         learn to resolve common and routine errors accessing library resources on computers, tablets, and e-readers.

·         learn the use of computers, tablets, e-readers in accessing library services and resources.

·         identify bibliographic records that match books or other forms of library material by searching the on-line catalog

·         make simple arithmetic calculations

·         deal tactfully and effectively with the public

·         speak, read and write in a specified foreign language and the English language fluently and clearly for the Bilingual Specialty

·         perform light manual tasks involving lifting and carrying books

·         perform duties with manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statements represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 8/22.)

 

EDUCATION:

 

            Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.

 

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT FOR THE BILINGUAL SPECIALTY

 

            Sufficient training and/or experience to be able to understand and speak fluently and clearly in a designated foreign language.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

            Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
