This is full performance level stone mason work, performing construction and repair of masonry structures. Employees in this class use stone masonry tools and materials to repair or construct such structures as retaining walls, bridges, piers and foundations for park buildings. Work includes performing tasks in other masonry related fields. Work is performed under the general supervision of a trades or maintenance supervisor.

ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)

1. The position must be performing full performance level stone mason work in the construction and repair of masonry structures.

• Uses chisel, hammer and other shaping tools to shape stone for setting; spreads mortar over stone and foundation with trowel and sets stone in place; moves stone into final position with mallet, hammer, or crow bar; finishes joints between stones with a pointing trowel.
• Rebuilds and repairs retaining walls, bridges, and piers; builds foundations for park buildings; repairs flood control walls on river banks; repairs and reforms masonry statutes; cuts, repairs, and lays marble tiles; removes and replaces cobblestones; applies stucco finish to the exterior of buildings; may erect and work from scaffolding.
• Cuts, patches, and dresses marble, granite, and limestone used in the building of plaques, archways, and parts of ancient and historic buildings, plazas, and courtyards.
• Constructs parking bumpers and corral fence posts; performs other related trade tasks as required by the work situation and climatic conditions.
• Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

• the methods, materials, tools and practices used in the stone masonry trade.
• the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

SKILL IN:

• the care and use of tools employed in the stone masonry trade.
• laying stone and other materials used in the stone masonry trade.

ABILITY TO:

• understand and follow oral and written instructions, rough sketches, and blueprints.
• erect and work from scaffolding.

EDUCATION:

• Education equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.

  EXPERIENCE:
  

• Three years of experience learning the stone masonry trade as a helper or apprentice.

Or any equivalent combination of education and experience, determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
