BRIDGE CRANE OPERATOR

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

            This is skilled work operating a bridge crane and performing general maintenance duties at the City's transfer station on an assigned shift.  Employees in this class operate overhead bucket cranes to load refuse from the holding tractor trailer trucks for transportation to disposal sites.  The safe and efficient operation of a series of electric controls to effect movement of the bridge crane and positioning of the clam shell buckets is a significant aspect of this job.  Work involves some light physical effort under conditions which can be only partially controlled.  Work is performed under the general supervision of a technical superior. 

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

            Operates control levers to effect movement of bridge crane and positioning of clam shell buckets to gather refuse and load tucks; transfers refuse from delivery areas to other sections of holding pits in order to permit accommodation of additional refuse deliveries and segregation of wet and dry refuse. 

            Tests operating controls to ensure bridge crane is operating safely and properly; inspects hoisting cable to determine that no points are frayed.

            Uses a grease gun and other implements to oil and lubricate the various moving parts of bridge cranes; performs minor repairs to the crane such as replacement of hoisting cables, small electric switches, and teeth on clam shell buckets using a variety of small hand tools such as screwdrivers and wrenches; operates controls to ensure that repairs are effective.

            Uses hoisting hooks to lift and move heavy motors and other equipment during repair or maintenance processes; assembles rope, cable, chain and rigging swings and attaches them to materials that are to be hoisted.

            Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

·         Hand tools required to service bridge cranes

·         the component parts and operating principles of bridge cranes and accessory equipment

·         the functions and capabilities of bridge cranes and accessory equipment

·         the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade

 

 

SKILL IN:

 

·         demonstrating hand/eye coordination

·         the safe and efficient operation of bridge cranes

 

ABILITY TO:

 

·         work at elevations of at least 70 feet

·         Perceive depth accurately

·         service and lubricate bridge cranes

·         to make minor  mechanical repairs and adjustments

·         understand and follow oral and written instructions

·         work independently and with others

·         learn the principles and methods used in rigging large pieces of machinery and other equipment preparatory to crane hoisting

·         identify potentially hazardous materials

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE  (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 12/13.)

 

EDUCATION:

 

            Ability to read and write English and satisfactory completion of a Streets Department approved training course in crane operations

 

AND

EXPERIENCE:

 

            Six months of experience in the operation of bridge-type or related cranes.

           

OR

 

            Any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources. 

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

            Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
