SIGN FABRICATOR

 

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

            This is sign fabrication work at the full performance level.  Work includes painting from silk screens, stencils and computer-automated equipment in the fabrication of printed sign material.  Employees have responsibility for completing assigned sign-making tasks.  Work involves light physical effort and is performed under the direction of a trades supervisor.

 

ALLOCATING FACTORS:  (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)

 

•           The work must be performed at the full performance level, performing skilled fabrication of signs.

•           Employees in this class must produce signage using computer-automated sign making equipment.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

            Lays out and builds silk screens, lays out and cuts stencils.

            Mixes, matches and blends paints and enamels.

            Utilizes computer hardware and software to layout and select typography for printed sign material and generate lettering for signs.

            Feeds and operates semi-automatic sign painting machines, and vinyl letter baking machines.

            Repairs large traffic signs in the field using paint and reflective adhesive.

            Cuts, paints and prepares sign blanks.

            Designs special posters and signs when required.

            May assemble multi-panel signs.

            Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

•           the methods, materials, and practices of the sign fabrication trade.

•           mixing, matching, and blending paints.

•           computer operated graphics hardware and software to produce signs.

•           layout and building silk screens.

•           automated and semi-automated equipment to produce silk screened signs.

 

SKILL IN:

 

•           mixing, matching, and blending paints.

•           layout, building and producing silk screens and silk screened signs.

ABILITY TO:

 

•           utilize computer-automated hardware and software to layout, select and generate printed sign material.

•           interpret and work from sketches, penciled layouts, and specifications.

•           design signs.

•           design, build, and use silk screens.

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE  (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 3/23.)

 

EDUCATION

 

            Equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

 

AND

GENERAL EXPERIENCE

 

            Three years of experience learning the sign fabrication trade as a helper or apprentice, which shall have included lettering work by painting, using the silk screen process and the use of computer operated graphics hardware and software to produce signs.

 

NOTE:            Completion of  post high school vocational trades program with certification in the areas of graphic arts/design, sign making, machinist, or a related field  may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

            Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
