GENERAL DEFINITION
This is office equipment operation work either operating and maintaining offset presses, digital printers, copiers and laminators or operating and maintaining computerized mail equipment of moderate to large sizes. An employee in the Printing Press Operator Specialty of the class performs duties within a diversified printing operation, utilizing presses, digital printers and copiers that possess a maximum sheet size capacity equivalent to moderate or large size stock. Assignments include pasting, stripping, padding, drilling, folding, platemaking, bindery and multi-color reproduction. An employee in the Mail Equipment Operator Specialty serves as lead worker directing the activities of lower level staff operating computerized mail equipment to sort, perforate, fold, seal, apply bar codes, and print postage for outgoing mail for various city agencies and departments. Positions in the Printing Press Operator Specialty are differentiated from the next lower class in the series by the responsibility for engaging in multicolor reproduction which involves half-tone, solid line copy and close registration work, and which requires multiple grades, finishes and weights of stock. Work is performed under the supervision of a printing services or mail center supervisor and involves light physical exertion, contact with printing and cleansing solutions and exposure to a noisy environment.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be approved for this class.)
1. Positions in the Printing Press Operator Specialty of this class must print complex multi-color items within a maximum sheet size operating a moderate or large size press and use of high speed copiers in a diversified printing shop operation in the Records Department.
2. Positions in the Mail Equipment Operator Specialty of this class must operate a variety of computerized mail machines and lead staff in mail activities in the Department of Revenue’s mail center.

ALL SPECIALTY
Performs minor repairs on printing or mail office equipment; checks and monitors component parts of equipment, packages materials for pick up.
Performs related work as required.
MAIL EQUIPMENT OPERATOR SPECIALTY
Leads and participates in operating a variety of computerized mail equipment to sort, perforate, fold, seal, apply bar codes, and print postage for outgoing mail for various city agencies and departments; ensures envelopes and supplies are available to process mail; checks tray and sleeves mail for pick up by the United States Postal Service;
Provides technical support to log into computer consoles and assists in selecting appropriate program for batch of mail; selects/enters data to monitor and to track the volume of mail and amount of postage by City department; generates reports of mail processed.
Diagnoses and troubleshoots mail processing equipment for minor operational problems; makes minor adjustments to parts or replaces equipment parts; monitors deliveries of equipment and supplies from vendors and United States Postal Service.
PRINTING PRESS OPERATOR SPECIALTY
Prints single and multicolor items on a single or multicolor press which involve half-tone, solid line copy and close registration work; mounts paper or metal plate onto a press; cuts size of paper; stacks paper on feeder; positions guides and sets press for size and thickness of paper; adjusts paper holder and pressure valves to hold and regulate flow of speed; mixes two or more colors for a color solution; feeds and controls water and color solution cylinders; regulates and evenly distributes ink flow; aligns plates for half-tone, solid line copy and close registration work; runs test copies for clarity, precision, registration and color quality; makes necessary adjustments to press and runs job; monitors press while in operation; changes color solution and/or mounts paper or metal plate as many times as the number of multiple colors, grades, finishes and prints involved; cleans printing plates and press between color changes, using type cleaner or solvent; removes material item after completion; uses various high speed digital printers and copiers, small and large size laminators, and numbering/perforator/scoring machine.
Performs
bindery and shipping work; cuts, folds, drills, mounts, pads, folds and staples
materials with use of various binding equipments;
packages material items for delivery; loads and unloads material stock from
vendor truck; orders parts for various presses and copiers which include drum
modules, waste containers, ink, and plate material; communicates with clients
to understand their printing needs, and reach out to them once job is
completed; sets priorities for work according to the importance and the due
date.
Performs minor repairs on printing equipment; cleans water and color solution cylinders; checks component parts of printing equipment such as rollers, pressure valves and water and color solution cylinders for malfunction; cleans and files paper or metal plate after use.
May assist in the revision and/or preparation of various city forms and production specifications; reviews source document for accuracy and completeness; describes and/or designates types of materials, paper sizes, type of ink, special features and packing arrangements for source document; converts hard copy materials into electronic format utilizing various software; prepares paper reimbursement form at the end of fiscal year for supervisor review.

EDUCATION:
ALL SPECIALTIES:
Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
MAIL EQUIPMENT OPERATOR SPECIALTY:
Two years of experience performing mail processing operations work.
PRINTING PRESS OPERATOR SPECIALTY:
One year of experience in the operation of offset printing and duplicating machines.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
MAIL EQUIPMENT OPERATOR SPECIALTY:
One year of experience as an Office Machinery Equipment Operator performing mail processing work operating and maintaining computerized high speed/high volume mail equipment in the Revenue Department’s Mail Center.
PRINTING PRESS OPERATOR SPECIALTY:
Two years of offset printing experience which has included multicolor reproduction.
OR
Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources which has included the specific experience.
NOTE: Completion of a Vocational or Trade school training program in multi-color reproduction may be substituted for one year of the specific experience for the Printing Press Operator Specialty only.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
