OFFICE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

 

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

This is semi-skilled work in the operation of scanning or computerized mail processing equipment in a high volume setting.  Employees in the Scanner Operator assignment are responsible for operating high-speed scanners to reproduce documents and for proofing scanned documents.  Employees in the Mail Equipment Operator assignment are responsible for operating high-speed mail processing equipment to sort, fold, insert and print postage for mailings requested by city departments in the Department of Revenue’s mail center.  Work involves light physical activity and is performed under the close supervision of an administrative superior. 

 

ALLOCATING FACTORS:  (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)

 

1.         Positions in the Scanner Operator assignment must be responsible for reproducing records, charts, drawings, maps, blueprints, documents and/or books and operating scanning equipment.

2.         Positions in the Mail Equipment Operator assignment must perform work in the Department of Revenue’s mail center operating high-speed, computerized mail equipment to sort, fold, insert, and print postage for mailings requested from city departments.

ALL ASSIGNMENTS

 

Maintains log books or records of the work assigned for the day and the work completed by each machine operator.

Troubleshoots equipment and performs maintenance for minor operational problems; may make minor adjustments to parts or replace equipment parts; cleans and maintains machine.

Performs related work as required.

 

SCANNER OPERATOR ASSIGNMENT

 

Operates a high speed scanner in the reproduction of records, charts, drawings, maps, documents and books; makes labels and place them correctly on each page to be scanned; loads scanner and scan documents; adjusts scanner for proper focus and exposure time; examines documents after scanning for unclear images; correct unclear images by viewing log and bar codes and re-keying in documents by numbers and control scanning process to insure reproduction of clear images.

Operates a high-speed scanner to reproduce drawings and plans which makes contact prints, tone enlargements, reduced prints and scale changes.

Operates related photographic equipment such as an Engineering Printer or Digital Copier to reproduce line drawings and blueprint tracings.

Selects desired paper size; remove staples from documents before scanning; after scanning, perform stapling and binding of sheets and other finishing work.

Maintains records of work performed.

Performs related work as required.

 

MAIL EQUIPMENT OPERATOR ASSIGNMENT

 

Operates computerized mail equipment to sort, perforate, fold, insert, seal and prints postage and bar codes for outgoing mail for various city departments; trays and sleeves mail to prepare for pickup by the United States Postal Service; may pick up and transport mail from city departments to the mail center; assists in loading mail onto postal trucks using hand trucks and pallets.

Logs in to computer console to select jobs to be processed and to monitor the volume of mail and amount of postage by city department; generates reports of mail processed. 

Performs related work as required.

MAIL EQUIPMENT OPERATOR ASSIGNMENT

 

·                     interpret United States Postal Service Postage Rate Tables and apply to Postal Service regulations to process a high volume of mail

·                     learn to operate a variety of computerized mail processing equipment

·                     establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and associates

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE  (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 12/13.)

 

EDUCATION

 

            Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

 

AND

GENERAL EXPERIENCE

 

Six months of general clerical or laboring experience.

 

AND

SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE

 

Six months of experience in the operation of scanners or other photographic reproduction equipment.

 

OR

 

Six months of experience operating computerized, high speed/high volume mail equipment such as Pitney Bowes, Neopost or equivalent capable of sorting, folding, inserting, and printing postage.

           

Or any equivalent combination of training and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources which includes the specific experience described above. 

 

NOTE: Selective Factor Certification may be utilized, as needed, to fill specific positions.

In accordance with Civil Service Regulation 11.032 - Selective Factor Certification - the appointing authority may request certification of eligible candidates with the specified experience to fill specific positions in this class. Certification to fill positions may be made from the two highest ranking eligible candidates on the eligible list who possess the specified experience in the area of assignment. 

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
