ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT SUPERVISOR

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

            This is technical and supervisory electronic equipment repair work directing the installation, repair and maintenance of a variety of digital, analog, audio, video and radio equipment.  Employees are responsible for in-shop repairs and, through subordinate supervisors, for field installation, repair and maintenance of such equipment. Work is performed under the direction of an administrative and technical superior.  Assignments require evaluative thinking and are carried out in accordance with accepted standards and applicable Federal Communication Commission and other regulations. The employee in this class has controlling responsibility for the installation, repair and maintenance of a variety of digital, analog, audio, video and radio equipment. 

 

ALLOCATING FACTORS:  (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)

 

  1. Positions must be located in the Water Department or the Airport.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

            Performs supervisory level project management and inspection responsibilities for the repair, maintenance, and installation of digital, analog, audio, video, microprocessor, modem, multi-plexer, fiber optic, microwave telemetry, plant processing, aviation, and radio frequency equipment; inspects or directs the inspection of public works electronics projects; reads and interprets schematic diagrams, logic charts, drawings, sketches, and manufacturers manuals; uses computer diagnostics and other test equipment to locate malfunctioning or defective parts.

            Analyzes repair work performed on electronic equipment in order to correct recurring malfunctions.

            Orders parts and equipment needed for the repair and maintenance of electronic equipment and systems; manages standing purchase orders; maintains inventory control records of all purchases; maintains records of work assigned and completed; enforces vendor's compliance with contract requirements; interprets specifications and contract requirements to resolve disputes between the site inspector and the contractor. 

            Assigns work to technical employees engaged in the in-shop repair and maintenance of a variety of digital, analog, audio, video and radio equipment such as closed circuit TV, videophones, microwave radio, mobile radio, public address, walkie talkies, electronic security systems and related or similar electronic equipment; assists the technicians in difficult or problem repairs; explains new equipment to the technicians using schematic diagrams to point out possible trouble areas; reviews work in progress and upon completion for workmanship and thoroughness.

            Assigns work through subordinate supervisors to employees engaged in field repair, maintenance and installation of electronic equipment such as closed-circuit TV, microwave data/radio links, public address and display systems, videophones, electronic security systems, fire alarm and fire suppression systems and related or similar equipment. 

            Assists in evaluating communications systems to improve their efficiency and reliability; makes suggestions for modifications of communications systems.

            Completes reports required by the Federal Communications Commission and other federal, state and local agencies on repairs made on equipment.

            Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

·         mathematics and electricity necessary to calculate strength and variations of electrical and electronic currents as they pertain to the functions and operations of electronic equipment

ABILITY TO:

 

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 2/18.)

 

EDUCATION:

 

            Equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

 

AND

            Successful completion of an electronic training course of at least one year's duration at a state licensed trade school.

 

AND

GENERAL EXPERIENCE

 

            Four years of experience troubleshooting, modifying, testing, calibrating, adjusting, repairing, and installing electronic and/or instrumentation equipment.

 

AND

SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:

 

            Two years of experience performing supervisory level technical electronic and instrumentation maintenance and repair work.

 

OR

 

Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources which has included the specific experience and completion of the twelfth school grade as an educational minimum. 

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

            Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

 

            Possession of a valid radio technician certificate issued by Association of Police Communication Officers or the National Association of Business, Education and Radio during tenure of employment as an Electronic Equipment Supervisor prior to appointment if required by work assignment.

            Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as an Electronic Equipment Supervisor.

            Must be able to pass and maintain SIDA (Security Identification Display Area) and AOA (Airfield Operations Area) clearance for positions at the Airport.
