TRAFFIC SIGNAL GROUP LEADER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is supervisory work directing a crew engaged in the installation and repair of traffic signal equipment and appurtenances. Work includes the responsibility for the completion of assigned tasks and involves regular exposure to uncontrolled and/or unpredictable conditions and light physical effort.
Work is performed under the general supervision of a technical superior. Assignments require evaluative thinking and are carried out in accordance with standard practices of the electrical and construction trades. Employees supervise and may participate with workers engaged in the installation and repair of traffic signal equipment and appurtenances.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Supervises the work of a crew of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers engaged in assembling, installing, connecting, disconnecting, removing and repairing traffic signals, controllers, detectors, poles, conduits, and underground and overhead wires and cables.
- Interprets assignments to determine operations to be performed and equipment, material, supplies, tools and personnel needed.
- Requisitions equipment, material, supplies and tools needed.
- Lays out and performs or directs assembly, erection, installation, connection, and testing of electrical service and equipment for signalling and control; sets timing devices using stop-watch to set intervals and coordinate individually-timed and operated signal installations. Sets, adjusts, checks and evaluates operation of detectors.
- Instructs journeyman tradesmen in mounting and connecting controllers, detectors and signals, laying conduit and installing and connecting wires and cables; directs the erection and removal of poles, installation and replacement of underground and overhead wiring and adjustment of controllers and detectors.
- Makes daily report of installation and repair work done by crew, including time, labor and material used; makes report of traffic signal equipment damaged by vehicles or otherwise; prepares sketches for proposed installation of conduit on new or resurfaced streets; prepares sketches of intersections, installations and wire and cable runs.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the mechanical and electrical operations of traffic signal equipment.
- the standard tools, testing devices, materials, methods and practices of the electrical trade as they apply to traffic signal equipment.
- the principles and theory of electricity as they apply to traffic signal equipment.
- the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the electrical trade.
SKILL IN:
- the use of tools and equipment essential to the installation and repair of traffic signal equipment and appurtenances.
ABILITY TO:
- plan, assign and review the work of personnel engaged in various phases of traffic signal installation and repair.
- instruct and consult with tradesmen on complex installation of traffic signal equipment and appurtenances.
- prepare sketches and interpret and work from electrical and electronic diagrams, engineering drawings, work orders and trouble reports.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 4/1973.)
- Education equivalent to the completion of the tenth school grade.
- Five years of experience in the installation or repair and maintenance of electric traffic signal devices, including two years at the journeyman level.
Or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Traffic Signal Foreman.
