AUDIO VISUAL TECHNICIAN TRAINEE
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is entry level technical work in an audio-visual services program participating in the proper distribution, operation, maintenance, and minor repair of projection, sound, and computerized equipment for presentation and special events. Employees in this class support recording production engineers, educators, program producers and presenters to produce sound, vision and multimedia services for the Free Library. Work includes troubleshooting and assisting in preparing design specifications for recording and/or audio-visual equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of a technical superior.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)
1. Positions in this class must perform audio-visual technical work in the Free Library.
2. Positions must operate, maintain and troubleshoot audio-visual and/or recording equipment.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Processes requests and provides customer service to presenters and staff for audio visual services at the Free Library; obtains a variety of audio-visual supplies, media materials and equipment for use in community and staff events; sets up and operates players, recorders, projectors and related audio-visual equipment; logs in returned media materials; operates computer or other mobile devices; sets up and installs equipment such as microphones, sound speakers, video screens, projectors, video monitors, recording equipment, connecting wires and cables, sound and mixing boards for events; assists with camera operations; ensures equipment is installed according to designated layout; duplicates audio and video data.
Troubleshoots, tests and resolves equipment issues; diagnoses and corrects media system problems; sends equipment for repairs as needed; may load, operate and control digital equipment used in recording various performances; may make minor adjustments and simple repairs to a variety of audio-visual equipment, such as changing bulbs, cleaning lenses, etc.; ensures safe transfer and shipment of equipment; cleans and stores audio and video equipment when not in use; organizes and maintains an inventory catalog of audio visual materials and equipment; prepares and maintains records and reports related to audio-visual services.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
· digital media devices and their maintenance.
· the methods and procedures involved in audio-visual production and/or producing master recordings.
· the use of e-reader devices and computer storage devices for multimedia presentations.
· computer operations and networking concepts including internet protocol and computer-based control programs related to audiovisual and/or recording production.
· basic concepts of lighting controls.
SKILL IN:
• the operation of audio-visual equipment.
ABILITY TO:
• test, clean and troubleshoot audio-visual equipment.
• adapt to and implement new technologies in the audio-visual production field.
• read and interpret manufacturers' manuals and procedures related to audio-visual equipment.
• establish and maintain effective working relationships with other library personnel, guest presenters and educators, and the public.
• prepare periodic reports.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 6/15.)
EDUCATION
Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
EXPERIENCE
One year of experience operating audio-visual equipment for digital media presentations.
OR
Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources which includes completion of the twelfth school grade as an educational minimum.
NOTE: Successful completion of an Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in audio-visual technology, film production, media studies, communications or related field can substitute for the experience.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND REGISTRATIONS
Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment.
