ELECTRICAL GROUP LEADER

GENERAL DEFINITION

This is supervisory electrical work directing a group of full performance electricians engaged in maintaining and repairing high and low voltage electrical systems and equipment. Employees in this class plan and assign work, participate in the more difficult repairs and insure that jobs are completed in accordance with standard electrical trades practices and the National Electrical Code. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level maintenance or trades supervisor. Work involves conditions which can only be partially controlled, potentially hazardous, and require physical effort.

ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)

• The position must supervise a group of full performance Electricians.

• The position must plan, assign and review the maintenance, repair and installation of electrical systems and equipment.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

Plans and assigns work for a group of full performance electricians and helpers engaged in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and power distribution systems; provides technical advice or instructions necessary to expedite and complete work; reviews reports of work performed, problems encountered and supplies expended.

Tours work sites to check on work in progress and determine that it is performed in accordance with plans, the National Electrical Code standards and other applicable regulations; insures that proper safety practices are observed.

Develops preventive maintenance schedule for electrical equipment; receives and reviews requests for electrical work from maintenance superior; prepares cost, time and material estimates for jobs as required; prepares requisitions for parts and supplies used in regular maintenance and repair programs; keeps inventory of supplies on hand.

Prepares activity reports either by notations on work requests or by submitting periodic summaries itemizing activities performed and status of supplies.

Trains electricians and helpers in all aspects of the work.

Participates in the work by performing full performance electrical repairs as required.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE OF:

• the methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the electricians' trade

• the principles and theory of electricity

• the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the electricians' trade, including work with high voltages

• the regulations governing electrical installation, equipment, and appliances in Philadelphia

• the National Electrical Code (NEC)

SKILL IN:

• the care and use of tools, equipment, and testing devices used to maintain electrical systems

• detecting and repairing defects in a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment, including those using high voltage

ABILITY TO:

• direct the work of full performance electricians and helpers engaged in the alteration, maintenance, installation and repair of electrical equipment fixtures

• interpret and work from technical sketches and blueprints

• interpret schematics and prints

• keep concise records and prepare work status reports

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 8/08.)

EDUCATION:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.

AND

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:

Four years of experience in the electrical trade.

AND

SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:

Two years of electrician experience at the full performance level in the installation and repair of electrical systems utilizing switchgear, relays and powered by at least 440 volts.

OR

Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources that has included the specific experience described above.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid Electrical Contractor’s license issued by the Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections at the time of appointment, if required by job assignment.
