INDUSTRIAL PROCESS MACHINERY MECHANIC

GENERAL DEFINITION

This is skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of large industrial process machinery and related equipment.  Employees in this class work in one of the City's drinking water treatment, water pollution control or in a pumping operation performing preventive maintenance activities according to established schedules and corrective and emergency repair work as assigned.  Instructing other maintenance personnel in the proper maintenance methods, techniques and procedures is an aspect of the work performed.  This class is differentiated from related classes by the size and complexity of the industrial process machinery and related components such as, but not limited, to large feeding and mixing mechanisms and equipment, material handling machinery, solids collection, handling & transport systems, piping systems, belt & screw conveyors, rakes and screens, slide gates, sluice gates, gearboxes, centrifuges and cryogenic, chemical feed, large rotating equipment such as pumps, motors and conveying equipment, overhead cranes and by the necessity to follow specified safety procedures due to exposure to hazardous chemical and sewage substances as well preventing physical injury.  Work involves disagreeable conditions, and the lifting of heavy material.  Work is performed under the general supervision of a maintenance superior.

ALLOCATING FACTORS (The following conditions must be met for a position to be

allocated to this class.)

•         The position must perform skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of large industrial process machinery and equipment.

•         The positions must be located in one of the Water Department's drinking water treatment plant, water pollution control plant, or water pumping station.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

Regularly inspects large industrial process machinery and related mechanical components such as, but not limited to, large pumps, feeding and mixing mechanisms & equipment, incinerators, furnaces, grinders, digesters, flocculation and aeration tanks, heat exchangers, multi‑stage air compressors, bar screens, chain set ups, centrifuges and cryogenic, magnetic meters, pressure reduction valves, pressure protection valves, chemical feed and large rotating equipment, overhead cranes, water distribution storage tanks; follows an established schedule in performing a variety of preventive maintenance activities on industrial machinery including lubricating and cleaning parts, replacing belts, changing oil and adjusting and aligning components;  locates and diagnoses specific causes of equipment problems and performs corrective repairs;  dismantles devices to gain access to, and remove defective parts using hoists, cranes and hand and power tools;  installs, overhauls and reassembles machinery as required.

Dismantles large electric motors and mobile electrical generator units and inspects for defects; removes and disconnects component parts; reassembles and tests machinery and equipment for proper operation; cuts, threads and installs copper, terra cotta, concrete, ductile iron, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and galvanized pipe; installs sanitary fixtures and makes repairs or adjustments to component mechanisms; welds, brazes and burns component parts and performs basic machining work in the fabrication of metal items and parts.

Wears specialized clothing and protective eye and respiratory equipment in hazardous situations such as working around dangerous chemicals and toxic sewage substances; follows specialized safety procedures; installs, maintains and repairs chemical feed systems; inspects and prepares chemical storage tanks; participates in the disinfection of large water mains using chemical solutions; works in confined spaces; may respond to chemical leaks and releases; may neutralize chemical spills

Instructs and guides other personnel in the proper maintenance and repair methods, techniques and procedures; participates in maintenance/skills training programs.

Uses proper personal protective equipment and employs procedures and equipment to ensure safety of himself/herself and others in the performance of the work and the vicinity of the work area.

Performs detailed inspections of major components of the water infrastructure such as steel and concrete above ground water storage tanks, underground concrete storage basins, pumping station flumes, intakes, water conveyance conduits and remotely operated distribution valve chambers.

Records all maintenance and repair work performed; makes estimates of labor, time and materials used in task completion; draws sketches of needed parts and equipment when such requires machining or is unavailable in supply stock; refers to diagrams, blueprints and specifications in maintenance and repair work; prepares specifications and requisitions supplies, materials, tools and equipment for maintenance and repair projects.

Erects scaffolding to provide access to work areas and works from heights; uses overhead and jib cranes, block and tackle, slings, and hydraulic jacks to support or move machinery or other heavy equipment; performs maintenance duties to intakes on river via boats; removes tree debris and may chop ice on river or in water basins to ensure operation of large rotating equipment if required by assignment.

          Performs related work as required.
