ROOFER
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is skilled work at the full performance level in the maintenance, repair, and installation of roofs and related sheet metal appurtenances. Work includes and ranges from routine patchwork of roofs to installation of industrial-sized roofs up to 30,000 square feet.
Employees in this class are supervised by a trades or maintenance superior and perform roofing tasks as part of a maintenance and construction program. Work may involve some disagreeable environmental aspects, conditions which can be only partially controlled, and moderate physical effort.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)
- The position must be performing roofing maintenance, repair, and installation at the full performance level.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Locates and removes damaged areas of roofs; repairs roofs by applying a variety of surfacing materials such as slate, tin, tile, slag, asphalt, wood and felt shingles, corrugated metal, using small hand tools such as hammers, rippers, pincers, caulking guns, roofing knives and soldering irons; applies flashing and metal stripping for weather proofing.
- Utilizes a variety of large scale, motorized roofing equipment and other devices for major roof repair and installation such as tractors, powerbrushes, hydraulic hoists, bitumen applications, roof cutters, burner pump kettles, and roofing torches.
- May open up walls and ceilings in the installation and repair of roofs.
- Fabricates, repairs and installs rain spouts and gutters, eave boxes, skylights smoke pipes and other sheet metal appurtenances normally considered a part of the roof for repair purposes using tools such as pliers, sheers, rollers and brakes; may fabricate tin feed boxes and other small metal objects.
- May perform masonry, carpentry, and painting duties related to the installation and repair of roofs.
- May assign routine manual labor tasks such as rolling paper or heating tar to a small group of trades helpers; reviews work of helpers for conformance to instructions.
- Performs tasks as assigned during periods of inclement weather.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the methods, practices, materials, and tools used in the roofing trade and related sheet metal work.
- the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the roofing trade and related sheet metal work.
SKILL IN:
- the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in the roofing trade and related sheet metal work.
ABILITY TO:
- work from ladders and scaffolding.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- assign and review the work of lower-level roofing personnel.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 1/96.)
EDUCATION
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
EXPERIENCE
- Three years of experience learning the roofing trade as a helper or apprentice.
OR
Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of
a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of appointment if required by work assignments.
