Sign Fabrication Specialty
- Reviews requests from various city departments and agencies for the fabrication of finished signs and determines the methods of reproduction; assigns the design and building of silk process screens and other work to subordinate sign fabricators and laboring personnel; inspects work in progress and upon completion for conformance to standards and corrects unsatisfactory work habits or techniques.
- Maintains records of work production, equipment maintenance and repair; takes yearly inventory of all materials, supplies and equipment on hand; requisitions from storeroom.
- Utilizes a computer to layout and select typography for printed sign material and to generate lettering for signs.
- Performs silk screen, spray, stencil and free hand lettering work when necessary; determines malfunctioning part of inoperative equipment and orders new parts from catalogue.
- Keeps abreast of the latest methods, procedures, materials and equipment used in sign painting and fabrication work by reading trade journals, brochures, and catalogues and contracting manufacturers' representatives.
Both Specialties
- Mixes stains, pigments, and other paint ingredients to obtain proper color and consistency.
- Participates in work to demonstrate techniques or assist in completion of assignments when necessary.
- Maintains time, labor and materials records; orders materials as needed.
- Estimates time and materials necessary for individual work orders.
- Performs related work as required.

Sign Fabrication Specialty
- the methods and practices used in the fabrication of signs.
- the methods and practices used in hand lettering.
- the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania regulations governing the design of all traffic signs.
- computer operated graphics hardware and software to produce signs.
- the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
SKILL IN:
Both Specialties
- mixing paints and stains and matching and blending colors.
- the care and use of paint brushes, rollers, spray guns and other tools of the painting trade.

- supervise others.
- plan, assign and direct the work of full performance level painters, sign fabricators and/or laborers.

- Three years of experience in the painting or sign fabrication trade.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
OR
Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Painter Group Leader if required by work assignment.
