MASONRY GROUP LEADER

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

              This is supervisory masonry work.  An employee in this class is responsible for directing the activities of skilled masons, cement finishers, related trades workers and trades helpers and equipment operation personnel engaged in building and repairing stone, brick, block, cement, mortar, concrete and similar type structures. 

              Coordinating the activities of subordinates in order to complete work assignments is a significant aspect of work.  Work is performed under the general supervision of a technical superior. 

 

ALLOCATING FACTORS:             (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)

 

•            Positions must perform supervisory masonry and cement finishing work directing skilled masons, related trades workers and helpers and equipment operation personnel engaged in building and repairing stone, brick, block, cement, mortar, concrete and similar type structures.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

              Receives written and oral work requests for the construction or repair of walls, floors, foundations, and other interior and exterior structures; reviews requests and assigns to the appropriate tradesworkers; estimates and orders required materials and supplies; visits areas to observe size and kind of repair work, crew size and equipment necessary.

              Plans and assigns the work of skilled brick masons, stone masons, cement finishers, plasterers, trades helpers and equipment operation personnel engaged in the construction, maintenance or repair of stone, stucco, concrete, plaster, brick, terra cotta, asphalt, tile, cement, cinder and other structures; plans the construction of sidewalks, parking lots, small buildings and sheds, retaining walls, curbs and steps.

              Travels from location to location to tour work sites, spot checking work in progress or upon completion for conformance to job requirements and adherence to standard masonry and related trades practices; ascertains that work is performed under safe working conditions; points out poor workmanship by providing technical advice and ascertains that corrective measures are taken; reviews completed work to see that the proper vertical and horizontal alignment exists, that work is completed in the allotted time, and that other group leaders are notified to proceed with further maintenance.

              Participates in work to demonstrate techniques or assist in completion of priority assignments; may erect and work from scaffolding and ladders.

              Maintains time, labor and material records; orders materials as needed.

              Estimates time and materials necessary for individual work orders.

              Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

•            the standard tools, materials, methods and practices of masonry and related trades

•            the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the masonry trades

 

SKILL IN:

 

•            the care and use of tools and equipment used in the masonry trades

•            laying materials such as stone, brick, cinder block and concrete

 

ABILITY TO:

 

•            interpret technical sketches and plans

•            learn utilization of computer programs to enter and extract data

•            plan, assign and supervise the work of skilled masons and helpers

•            make estimates of labor, materials, cost, and time, and to keep work records

•            understand and follow oral and written instructions, rough sketches and blueprints

•            erect and work from scaffolding

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE  (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 6/97.)

 

EDUCATION:

 

              Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

 

AND

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:

 

              Three years of experience in one or more of the masonry trades, such as brick and stone masonry or cement finishing.

AND

SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:

 

              Two years of experience at the full performance level in any one of the recognized masonry trades.

             

OR

 

              Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department that has included the specific experience described above.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

              Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

 

              Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Common­wealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Masonry Group Leader if required by work assignments.
