CARPENTRY GROUP LEADER II
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is carpentry work at the first supervisory level in a department characterized by multiple carpentry shops and a moderate to large-sized group of full performance carpenters, and a number of semi-skilled and/or laboring personnel. An employee in this class supervises the activities of two or more carpentry crews engaged in fabrication, construction, alteration, repair and maintenance of wooden structures, articles and equipment. Work may include participation in the more difficult and complex work assignments scheduling other trades workers at phases of large renovation projects. Work is performed under the general supervision of a maintenance supervisor, and involves some disagreeable aspects.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met in order for a position to be allocated to this class.)
- The position must be responsible for supervising the activities of full performance carpenters in multiple carpentry shops engaged in the fabrication, construction, alteration, and repair of wooden structures, articles, and equipment.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Makes assignments of carpenters and helpers to construction or maintenance crews and to shop work; interprets construction plans and blueprints on major installation and construction projects; schedules other tradesworkers such as electricians and plumbers on large projects at critical points of construction.
- Reviews work orders; inspects job sites; makes estimates of time and materials for specific work; orders the required supplies; determines work priorities and assigns work; reviews work in progress and upon completion for conformance to job orders, work instructions and standard trade practices; ascertains that work is performed under safe work conditions.
- Directs the activities of personnel engaged in shop work using manual and power tools and equipment to fabricate, construct and repair articles such as wooden desks, tables, shelves and shanties.
- May perform skilled bench work in a carpentry shop operating such equipment as power saws, jointers, planers and wood lathes.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the standard practices, methods, materials, and tools of the carpentry trade and the qualities and uses of various woods.
- the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the carpentry trade.
SKILL IN:
- the use and care of tools, materials and equipment of the carpentry trade.
ABILITY TO:
- plan, assign and review the work of a group of employees engaged in the installation, maintenance and repair of carpentry fixtures and accessories.
- interpret and work from blueprints, sketches and specifications.
- estimate time and materials.
- follow oral and written instructions and to prepare rough working sketches.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 10/87.)
EDUCATION:
- Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
- Five years of experience in the carpentry trade, as a helper or apprentice.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
- Two years of full performance level carpentry experience.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined acceptable by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Carpentry Group Leader II, if required by work assignment.
