GENERAL DEFINITION
This is advanced journey level carpentry work and lead work in the construction, maintenance and repair of wooden articles, equipment, and structures. The employees in this class oversee the work of full performance carpenters, maintenance mechanics, trades helpers, semi-skilled laborers and laborers, are responsible for blueprint and plan interpretation, and also participates in the work. Work is performed under the general supervision of a trades group leader.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class.)
1. Positions in this class must be responsible for carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of wooden articles, equipment and structures.
2. Positions in this class must be responsible for lead work, overseeing the work of journey level carpenters and/or building maintenance mechanics.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Assigns work to a small group of full performance carpenters, semi-skilled and laboring personnel; reviews work in progress and upon completion for conformance to job orders, work instructions and standard trade practices; ascertains that work is performed under safe working conditions.
Erects building frames; prepares and studies sketches and building plans for information pertaining to types of materials required such as lumber or fiberboard, and dimensions of structures to be fabricated; selects specified type of lumber or other material using pencils, chalk, and marking gauges; shapes material to prescribed measurements using power saws, joiners, lathes, and other power and hand tools common to the carpentry trade; assembles, cuts and shapes materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue.
Lays out and builds stairs, partitions, tables, bookcases and wooden articles; applies shock-absorbing, sound-deafening and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls; builds and installs window frames, partitions, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware such as locks, letter drops and kickplates; inspects damaged framework and other structures and fixtures.
Constructs concrete forms and pouring chutes; erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
Cleans, sharpens and repairs hand and bench tools.
Makes simple estimates of time and materials; reads and interprets blueprints, plans and sketches.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
• the standard practices, methods, materials, and tools of the carpentry trade and the qualities and uses of various woods
• the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the carpentry trade
SKILL IN:
• the use and care of tools, materials and equipment of the carpentry trade
ABILITY TO:
• assign and review the work of a small group of employees engaged in the installation, maintenance and repair of carpentry fixtures and accessories
• interpret and work from blueprints, sketches and specifications
• estimate time and materials
• follow oral and written instructions and to prepare rough working sketches
• erect and work from ladders and scaffolding
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 7/19.)
EDUCATION:
Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.
AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
Four years of experience in the carpentry trade.
AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:
One year of journey level experience as a Carpenter 1.
Any equivalent combination of training and experience determined acceptable by the Office of Human Resources.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Carpenter 2, if required by work assignment.
