GENERAL DEFINITION
This is journey level carpentry work in the construction, maintenance and repair of wooden articles, equipment and structures. Employees in this class may supervise a small group of laborers or trades helpers engaged in the manual and fundamental tasks of the carpentry trade. Work is performed under the general supervision of a trades group leader or maintenance supervisor, involves some disagreeable aspects, and frequently requires moderate physical effort.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met in order for a position to be allocated to this class.)
1. Positions in this class must be responsible for carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of wooden articles, equipment, and structures.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Erects building frames, prepares and studies sketches, blueprints and building plans for information pertaining to types of materials required such as lumber or fiberboard, and dimensions of structures to be fabricated; selects specified type of lumber or other material using pencils, chalk, and marking gauges; shapes materials to prescribed measurements using power saws, joiners, lathes, and other power and hand tools common to the carpentry trade; assembles, cuts and shapes materials and fastens them together with nails, screws, dowel pins, or glue.
Lays out and builds stairs, partitions, tables, bookcases and wooden articles; installs drywall, using metal stud fasteners; applies shock-absorbing, sound-deafening and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls; builds and installs window frames, partitions, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware such as locks, letter drops and kickplates; replaces damaged framework and other structures and fixtures.
Constructs concrete forms and pouring chutes; erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
Cleans, sharpens and repairs hand and bench tools.
May assign work to and instruct a small group of laborers or trades helpers; inspects and criticizes work; gives advice on job when necessary.
May make simple estimates of time and materials.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
· the methods, practices, materials and tools used in the carpentry trade.
· the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the carpentry trade.
ABILITY TO:
· make simple estimates of time and materials.
· prepare and work from sketches and plans and to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
· make simple arithmetic computations.
· erect and work from ladders and scaffolding.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 8/67.)
EDUCATION:
Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
AND
EXPERIENCE:
Four years’ experience learning the carpentry trade as a helper or apprentice.
Or any equivalent combination of training and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources.
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Carpenter 1 if required by work assignment.
