Mechanical
- Inspects equipment in a variety of municipal institutions; lubricates moving parts; replaces
sprockets, loose belts and shear pins; disconnects, disassembles, cleans and replaces work parts
of a variety of mechanical equipment such as digestors, sludge pumps and conveyors, furnaces,
water pumps and valves, air handling units, related duct work and vents; operates such plant
equipment as air conditions and low pressure boilers by adjusting control valves and recording
temperatures and pressures.
In Both Specialties
- Works as a trades helper or labor lead worker with skilled mechanics and tradesmen on the more difficult and complex building maintenance or mechanical maintenance projects.
- Performs routine welding tasks in connection with regular maintenance mechanic work.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the methods, practices, materials and tools used in building maintenance trades such as, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electricity, roofing, and cement finishing for building specialty.
- methods, practices, materials, and tools used in the maintenance of machinery such as pumps, compressors, conveyor belts, feeding and mixing mechanisms, valves, reduction gears, furnaces, and steam systems for the Mechanical specialty.
- the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in the maintenance of buildings and related facilities or in the maintenance of a variety of mechanical equipment, depending on the area of specialization.
SKILL IN:
- the care and use of tools and equipment used for the maintenance of buildings or a variety of mechanical equipment, depending on the area of specialization.
ABILITY TO:
- perform tasks requiring mechanical aptitude.
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 7/68.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.
- Two years of maintenance and repair experiences as a helper or apprentice in the area of specialization.
Or any equivalent combination of training and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Maintenance Mechanic I if required by work assignment.
- Possession of a grade "B" Refrigeration Engineer's License issued by the Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections if required by work assignment.
