AUTO BODY REPAIR TEAM LEADER


GENERAL DEFINITION

  This is supervisory level auto body repair and welding work supervising full performance automotive trades workers engaged in the repair and rebuilding of auto bodies and related components. An employee in this class inspects vehicles damaged in accidents, compiles detailed estimates of required repairs and may prepare cost estimates for Risk Management to recover losses. Assigns and reviews the work of subordinate trades workers. Work includes assisting and providing technical advice to subordinate trades workers. Using Windows based computer systems with software designed to measure upper and lower body is essential in carrying out and performing job duties. Work is performed under the direction of a Fleet Maintenance Supervisor and involves physical exertion, contact with chemical solutions and exposure to a noisy environment.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

  Inspects City vehicles damaged in accidents; determines whether vehicle has past auto body repair record; prepares repair work order, detailing parts most likely to be damaged, and material and parts needed for the repair; consults manuals and/or the internet to estimate costs; calculates cost of materials for the repair; estimates time for work completion; calculates cost of labor based on estimated time for work completion; calculates total repair cost; compares total repair cost with past repair costs to determine feasibility of work. May work with insurance companies and/or City departments to recover losses.

  Plans, assigns and reviews the work of subordinate trades workers engaged in inspecting vehicles, replacing mechanical components and body parts and repainting vehicles; visits subordinate trades workers at work sites to ensure work progress; determines the most appropriate method for work; assists and provides technical advise to subordinate trades workers when and where needed; maintains and ensures subordinates maintain a full compliment of tools necessary to perform assigned maintenance, repair and inspection tasks; inspects completed repair work for conformance to trade standards; may perform diagnostic tests on vehicle. Performs repairs and paints as necessary.

  Prepares a variety of statistical reports; prepares requisitions for supplies and parts needed for repair; prepares status report of each vehicle repaired; compiles list of vehicles condemned due to extensive damage or over head cost; prepares subordinates' attendance and performance reports.

  Contacts and negotiate with vendors to ascertain availability of various auto parts and accessories, and of innovations and safety standards applicable in the automotive trade.

  Contacts various City agencies and departments for pick up of repaired vehicle and/or status report of vehicle.

  Performs related work as required.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 7/92.)

NOTE Training in a post high school approved automotive body repair trade school curriculum for a minimum of six months up to a maximum of one year can be equated on a month for month basis for the general experience requirements.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of appointment as an Auto Body Repair Team Leader.
