AUTOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN 1

(Body Repair)

(Mechanical Repair)

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

            This is intermediate level work in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of automotive mechanical or auto body equipment. Employees in the Body Repair specialty perform auto body repair work.  Employees in the Mechanical Repair specialty mechanical and hydraulic systems of trucks, automobiles and other vehicles and equipment.  Assignments are stable in nature and are carried out in accordance with standard trade practices and general work instructions.  Employees have a controlling impact on the repair assignments performed.  Work involves conditions which can only be partially controlled, and light physical effort in the form of working in tiring positions and the occasional lifting of heavy material. Work is performed under the general supervision of a technical superior. 

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

ALL SPECIALTIES:

 

            Performs the duties below of automotive maintenance technician work at the intermediate level in the area of specialization in the Office of Fleet Management.

 

BODY REPAIR SPECIALTY

 

            Repairs automotive body work; removes upholstery and trim prior to repair work; removes damaged fenders, panels and grills using wrenches and cutting torches; repairs and/or replaces doors, panels, bumpers, fenders, hoods, including sheet metal, aluminum and fiberglass bodies and other related structures.

            Aligns and/or replaces structural or mechanical parts damaged in accidents; reassembles parts disengaged prior to the repair.

            Performs related work as required.

 

MECHANICAL REPAIR SPECIALTY

 

            Repairs trucks, fire apparatus, automobiles, tractors, heavy construction and marine equipment, and their related mechanical and hydraulic appurtenances; determines cause of malfunctioning; repairs, replaces and adjusts such parts as brakes, steering systems, pumps, and hydraulic rams; tunes motors and aligns wheels.

            Rebuilds and repairs engines, transmissions, and differentials; tests rebuilt units for proper operation; diagnoses and repairs engine and chassis electronic systems.

            Performs emergency road service.

            Performs preventive maintenance inspections on all City vehicles.

            Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

•           the methods, materials, tools, and practices in the area of specialization

•           the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the automotive trade

•           the principles of operation of internal combustion engines

 

SKILL IN:

•           the use and care of tools employed in the automotive trade in the area of specialization

 

BODY REPAIR SPECIALTY

 

               the use of frame straightening and aligning equipment

 

MECHANICAL REPAIR SPECIALTY

 

•           locating and adjusting defects in motor equipment

•           the operation of various types of motor vehicles

 

ABILITY TO:

 

ALL SPECIALTIES:

 

•           understand and follow oral and written instructions

 

BODY REPAIR:

 

             apply paint properly

             align or replace damaged parts according to manufacturers’ specifications

 

MECHANICAL REPAIR:

 

•           troubleshoot, diagnose and test engines, electronics and mechanical systems

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 9/22.)

OPTION 1:

 

EDUCATION:

 

            Education equivalent to completion of the equivalent of the twelfth school grade.

 

AND LICENSE FOR THE MECHANICAL REPAIR SPECIALTY ONLY:

 

            Possession of a PA State Inspection’s License.

 

BOTH SPECIALTIES:

 

AND

EXPERIENCE:

 

            Two years of experience learning the automotive mechanic trade as a helper or apprentice.

 

OPTION 2:

 

BOTH SPECIALTIES:

 

EDUCATION:

 

            Education equivalent to completion of post high school trade program diploma.

 

AND

EXPERIENCE:

 

         One year of experience learning the automotive body repair trade as a helper or apprentice.

 

OPTION 3:

BOTH SPECIALTIES:

 

          Completion of an associate’s degree program in Automotive Technology or closely related field from an accredited technical institute, college or university.

 

OR

 

            Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources.

REQUIREMENT:

 

Automotive Apprentice (7F01)

Trades Helper (Auto Mechanic or Auto Body Specialties only) (7H01)

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

            Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES

 

            Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment if required by work assignment.

 

Possession of a valid, proper class, official safety inspection mechanic's license prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as an Automotive Maintenance Technician 1 for the Mechanical Repair specialty.

 

NOTE:  Employees are required, at the time of appointment; to possess and maintain a full complement of tools necessary to perform the tasks assigned.
