This is water distribution work monitoring and operating the water supply and transmission system from an electronic load control console on an assigned shift. Work includes interpreting and analyzing data provided by the system and performing the necessary operations to maintain water supply and pressure to the system in light of various outages, water supply quality constraints and unpredictable weather conditions. Identifying abnormalities and operating the water system especially during water supply emergencies are significant aspects of the work. The employee has a controlling responsibility for the operation of the water supply system. Work is performed under the supervision of a technical supervisor.

• Controls pressures, storage elevations and flow rates by electronically operating a large number of pumps and valves at various pumping stations; directs Pumping Station Engineer to perform manual operations in the event the electronic control system is inoperative; directs Emergency Support Services crews to operate valves necessary to maintain water supply.
• Operates a computerized visual and audio display panel consisting of various data points and load control panels. Responds to alarms that have been computer activated as a result of atypical variations in water pressure, elevations and flows within the load control system; determines if alarm is due to electronic outage or water system condition by analyzing data; initiates corrective action to restore water system to a safe condition; notifies supervisor and/or higher level superior of water system status; reviews hydraulic data for accuracy and correctness; reports incorrect data to repair units.
• Replaces fuses and makes other minor repairs to central control equipment; reports major defects to an electronic or instrumentation technician for repair.
• Reviews log book to ascertain actions taken on previous shift; notes in log all actions taken on current shift.
• Utilizes a computer system to display data, generate daily reports of water consumption, and run various other applications programs.
• Informs repair units of service needed; communicates unusual readings to operational personnel via telephone for in-plant action.
• Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

• Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.

• Four years of experience in one of the major phases of a water system, two years of which has been at the full performance level in maintenance or as a lead worker in operations.

Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
