RESERVOIRS MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is inspectional work monitoring the condition and efficiency of reservoir facilities and referring building, mechanical, instrumentation, and grounds maintenance projects for completion by assigned personnel. Work includes making frequent trips to reservoir facilities to ensure that all equipment, buildings and grounds are maintained properly. The employee in this class is routinely required to be available for emergency duty on weekdays and weekends in addition to the normal work week. Work is performed under the supervision of a technical
superior.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Tours reservoir facilities daily to observe the general cleanliness and operational efficiency of machinery, instrumentation and chemical feed and storage equipment and takes corrective action as required; observes physical appearance and performs basic chemical tests of water during treatment stages as an indication of efficiency of operation; confers with laboratory personnel on changes in the treatment process.
- Refers work to and reviews the work of personnel involved in maintaining and repairing water treatment equipment, chemical handling and application, and in the maintenance of buildings and grounds; refers work to and reviews the work of maintenance personnel replacing and repairing component parts of machinery and equipment on a routine or emergency basis.
- Makes frequent inspections of equipment and machinery in operation, observes operations, notes any malfunctioning or nonfunctioning; requests specialized and trades personnel for repair or replacement projects; reviews completed work for completeness and workmanship; reports quality of work to supervisors.
- Makes minor repairs and adjustments of equipment.
- Estimates and requisitions the quantities of various chemicals or materials required; contacts vendors to expedite deliveries, supervises delivery and storage.
- Maintains records and prepares reports pertaining to operation and maintenance activities at the reservoirs.
- May supervise a staff of personnel involved in grounds maintenance.
- Develops and implements a preventive maintenance program designed to obtain maximum efficiency of machinery and equipment.
- Instructs personnel in technical responsibilities and safety procedures such as those relating to chemical handling, especially in the unloading of toxic and corrosive chemicals.
- Disinfects new or repaired water delivery pipes installed at reservoirs; disinfects standpipes at various locations through the city.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- practices, methods, materials and tools used in the operation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment and instruments used in water treatment operations.
- the principles and practices of all phases and unit processes of potable water treatment.
- occupational hazards and safety precautions pertaining to the operation and maintenance of water treatment equipment, especially the handling and storage of toxic and corrosive materials.
ABILITY TO:
- understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- maintain records and prepare necessary operational reports.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and vendors.
- perform minor repairs of equipment and machinery at reservoirs.
- refer to and review the work of skilled, semiskilled and unskilled employees engaged in reservoir maintenance.
- detect and analyze defects in mechanical equipment and to estimate time, materials, and labor force needed for repairs.
- develop and implement an effective preventive maintenance program.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 6/88.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth school grade.
- Three years of experience in filter plant or reservoir operations or maintenance activities, one year of which has been in a lead worker capacity.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Reservoirs Maintenance Supervisor.
