STATIONARY ENGINEER GROUP LEADER

This is supervisory stationary engineering work directing the activities of a group of skilled employees engaged in operating primary heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment and auxiliary components in order to meet the variable demands for heating and cooling in a large building or plant facility. An employee in this class ensures the proper monitoring, adjustment, and operation of heating and cooling equipment to maintain adequate facility temperature and ventilation levels.

Employees identify equipment problems and supervise corrective repair work.

Ensuring that subordinate employees perform required equipment maintenance work for the safe and proper operation of heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment is a significant aspect of the work. Work is performed under the direction of a higher-level maintenance superior.

• The position must be responsible for supervising the activi¬ties of subordinate Stationary Engineers engaged in operating and maintaining primary heating, air-conditioning and refrig¬eration equipment for a large building or plant facility.

Plans, assigns, and reviews the work of skilled employees engaged in operating heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment in order to meet the variable demands for heating and cooling in a large building or plant facility; supervises the operation and maintenance of such heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment as boilers, chillers, generators, condensers, pumps, and motors; reviews daily log to keep track of proper temperatures, pressures, chemical compositions, and related data for the appropriate operation of equipment; orders changes to temperatures, pressures, chemical compositions, and related data as needed.

Tours area and monitors meters, gauges, and other instrumenta¬tion to check and identify any operating irregularities; evaluates operating irregularities and initiates corrective action; supervis¬es and participates in the repair and maintenance of boilers, chillers, generators, condensers, pumps, and motors, and ancillary components of heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment; supervises the regular preventive maintenance of equipment consisting of such work as replacing valves, bearings, seals, switches, and propellers on motors and pumps, adjusting and repairing replacement valves, and replacing coils, fans, and motors.

Prepares weekly and monthly status reports on operational activities; prepares requisitions for parts, materials, and supplies; monitors contracted maintenance and repair work on equipment for conformance with specifications; manages requirements contracts.

May utilize an automated heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration control system to monitor and operate equipment; sets commands and sequences computerized controls to adjust and stabilize temperatures.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
• the operation, maintenance, repair, inspection, and overhaul of primary heating, ventilation and cooling equipment, includ¬ing boiler and air-conditioning and refrigeration units and associated mechanical and electrical control systems
• the hazards and safety precautions involved in the operation, maintenance, repair, inspection, and overhaul of primary heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment
• the principles of electricity, especially as they apply to heating, ventilation and air-conditioning and refrigeration systems
• applied chemical water treatment procedures necessary to maintain non-corrosive systems
• the principles and techniques utilized to safely and properly operate heating, ventilation and air-conditioning and refrig¬eration systems
SKILL IN:
• the use and care of tools and equipment employed in the operation maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment
ABILITY TO:
• plan, assign, and review the work of skilled operations personnel engaged in the operation and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment
• make estimates of time, materials and costs
• prepare and keep labor, parts and related records
• read and interpret schematics and diagrams for heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment
• read and interpret meter indications of amperage, voltage, pressure, rate of flow, temperature and other qualities
• establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates

EDUCATION

Equivalent to the twelfth school grade.

AND
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:

Four years of experience operating and maintaining large primary heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment as a helper or apprentice.

AND
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE:

Two years of experience operating and maintaining large primary heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment at the full performance level.

OR


Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources, which has included the specific experience described above.

NOTE: Training in a post high school approved stationary engineering trade school curriculum for a minimum of six months up to a maximum of one year can be equated on a month by month basis for the general experience requirement.

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

Possession of a grade "A" Steam Boiler, Stationary and Refrigeration Engineer license issued by the Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections if required by work assignment.

Possession of an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Universal Technician Certificate for the proper handling of cfcs if required by work assignment.
