RECREATION DISTRICT CARETAKER SUPERVISOR I
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is supervisory caretaker and grounds maintenance work with employees in this class being
responsible for directing the work activities of a group of caretakers, laborers, and equipment operators
involved in the cleaning, caretaking, and grounds maintenance activities in an assigned recreation district. This work differs from the next lower level in this series in that the employee supervises a larger number of employees. The ability to motivate subordinates to effectively complete their assigned tasks is of major
significance to the work. Assignments may include shiftwork. Work is performed under the supervision of a maintenance superior.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Plans, schedules and assigns cleaning duties to subordinates; tours work areas to determine cleaning needs; prepares a list of areas that need work; determines the size of crews needed to perform cleaning functions.
- Supervises, through a subordinate crew chief, the grass cutting, seeding and routine grounds
maintenance activities in an assigned district; prepares schedules of areas requiring grounds maintenance work.
- Inspects work areas while work is being performed and upon completion to determine the work quality; points out unacceptable work and re-inspects to see that corrective measures have been taken.
- Trains employees in proper cleaning methods and maintenance procedures; conducts safety meetings.
- Inspects buildings for safety hazards; checks fire extinguishers for up-to-date inspection.
- Reviews requests for materials, tools, equipment, and supplies and prepares appropriate requisitions;
issues supplies to subordinates.
- Maintains records and prepares reports pertaining to personnel and work performance.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- the materials, methods, and practices used in cleaning and caretaking operations.
- the operation and use of janitorial equipment necessary to complete work assignments.
- supervisory methods and procedures.
- the occupational hazards and safety precautions used in cleaning work.
ABILITY TO:
- assign work to and supervise subordinates.
- train and instruct employees in proper cleaning and maintenance procedures.

- prepare records and reports pertaining to daily operations.
- estimate supplies needed for cleaning operations.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
(The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 8/86.)
- Education equivalent to completion of the tenth school grade.
- Four years of experience in the cleaning and care of grounds or buildings, two years of which shall have included the supervision of employees engaged in the cleaning and care of grounds or buildings, one year of which has been supervising employees performing such work at Recreation Department facilities.
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Personnel Department.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND/OR CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment as a Recreation District Caretaker Supervisor I.
