PARKS AND RECREATION FACILITIES CARETAKER 1
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is routine manual work in the maintenance and care of parks and recreation department facilities and grounds which includes maintaining facility cleanliness, performing grounds maintenance, performing minor repair work, and assisting skilled trades workers in the performance of minor work orders. Work is performed under the supervision of a district caretaker supervisor. Assignments will include the cleaning and care of assigned buildings and surrounding grounds or performing grounds maintenance work as a member of a crew in a recreation park or square. Work is carried out in accordance with detailed work instructions. Work involves some disagreeable aspects and requires moderate physical effort.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
GENERAL
· Sweeps, mops and scrubs floors; waxes and polishes floors; washes windows; dusts furniture and woodwork; empties trash receptacles
· Occasionally secures loose flooring, ceiling tiles and paneling, measures partitions and shelves, repairs holes in panels or partitions
· Tightens door locks; repairs doors by tightening hinges or nailing wood over holes in doors or windows
· Tightens bolts on bleachers and benches; secures seats and footplates
· Repairs sport and play equipment by tightening nuts and bolts, wiring crossbraces and bending basketball rims into place
· Checks thermostat to assure proper temperature is being maintained
· Cleans debris from gutters and downspouts on one-story buildings
· Keeps building free of safety hazards.
ELECTRICAL
· Replaces light bulbs, switchplates and coverplates; resets circuit breakers; replaces fuses.
PLUMBING AND HEATING
· Unclogs sink by removing debris; unclogs toilets and urinals by removing debris and plunging; turns off water supply to leaking or running fixtures; replaces lavatory supplies
· Cleans debris from water fountains and catch basins.
PAINTING
· Washes wall and woodwork; scrapes loose and peeling paint and plaster; removes protruding nails and screws; removes obstacles from area to be painted; does minor painting such as covering graffiti.
OUTDOOR/ PARK GROUNDS
· Maintains and improves park grounds, roads and related facilities including the Fairmount Water Works
· Ensures that site is well-maintained and ready for visitors at all times
· Sweeps and cleans all walks from curb line; cuts grass using a power mower; rakes leaves; trims hedges and bushes; seeds and waters grounds areas as required; shovels snow; keeps playground areas free of debris and safety hazards; digs and loads rocks, ballast, crushed stone and dirt onto trucks; unloads trucks; fills holes and compacts fill by tamping. Moves or aids in moving heavy containers or equipment, and large or bulky objects
· Picks up refuse and litter from grounds; cleans recreation areas and adjacent buildings; dumps refuse containers; regrades, fills and marks site as deemed necessary
· Learns to perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment such as, lubricating motors and adjusting and sharpening mower blades
· Operates power tools and equipment such as, mowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, mulchers, non-riding snow blowers and other equipment as assigned
· Makes play areas; lines fields; fills holes and low areas
· Assesses site after events to check for damage and notifies appropriate staff
· Records and reports graffiti and conducts graffiti removal as required; contacts appropriate staff if removal requires additional equipment or materials
· Removes rust and repaints balusters and railings throughout site
· Learns to identify desirable and undesirable plants and vegetation; trims and cuts grass and hedges; removes weeds from brick pavers, brick edging, and areas under benches; removes vines from and prunes trees as directed
· Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE OF:

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 6/15).
EDUCATION:
Education equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.
AND
EXPERIENCE:
Successful completion of 40 hours of training in the maintenance and care of recreation or parks facilities and grounds provided by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society or by an agency approved by the Department of Parks and Recreation.
OR
One year experience with a landscape, nursery, grounds or other related maintenance job.
OR
Thirty hours of college coursework in a related field (nursery, ground arboriculture or landscape design).
