(General)
GENERAL DEFINITION
This is manual, custodial work in the care of public or institutional buildings and surrounding grounds. Employees in the Airport Specialty perform custodial work and limited customer service work. For employees in the Airport Specialty, contact with the public and departmental associates is required to provide information or directions to the information desk, amenities, restrooms, baggage claim, transportation, and exits, and to report damages and security concerns. Employees in the General specialty perform lead worker level custodial work in all departments except for the Airport. Employees in General Specialty also participate in manual work as required. Work is performed under the close supervision of a higher level custodial or other supervisor.
ALLOCATING FACTORS: (The following conditions must be met for a position to be allocated to this class:)
1. Positions in the General Specialty must be responsible for serving as a lead worker over a small group of custodial workers providing custodial care of buildings and surrounding grounds areas.
2. Positions must be responsible for performing custodial work, such as mopping and scrubbing floors, waxing and polishing floors and furniture, moving furniture, sweeping and cleaning walks and related work.
3. Positions in the Airport Specialty must perform custodial work in the Airport.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
ALL SPECIALTIES
Requisitions wax, cleaner and other janitorial supplies; distributes supplies to custodial workers, and checks the use of supplies and equipment; performs custodial duties.
Makes minor repairs to buildings and equipment; reports needed repairs to a supervisor.
Keeps simple records and makes reports.
Performs related work as required.
AIRPORT SPECIALTY
Washes and sanitizes lavatories and restock disposables; sweeps and mops floors and vacuums carpets; disposes trash; climbs step ladders to clean elevated areas.
May perform heavy sanitizing duties affiliated with night shift routines; may shovel snow from the sidewalk areas; moves or lifts chairs or other heavy items as needed.
Provides travelers and members of the public with information about or directions to the information desk, amenities, restrooms, baggage claim, transportation, and exits.
Identifies and reports safety and security concerns in the performance of custodial duties.
Reports damages to maintenance staff.
Requests assistance for travelers in emergency situations, including medical emergencies.
GENERAL SPECIALTY
Serves, in a lead worker capacity, over a small number of custodial workers engaged in such duties as mopping and scrubbing floors, waxing and polishing floors and furniture, moving furniture, sweeping and cleaning walks, and otherwise keeping buildings, equipment and premises in an orderly condition; participates in tasks as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
ALL SPECIALTIES
· the materials, methods and practices used in cleaning operations
· the operation and care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment
· safety precautions used in the performance of custodial work
AIRPORT SPECIALTY
· the floorplan and layout of Airport facilities
ABILITY TO:

· communicate basic information about location of Airport information desks, amenities, restrooms, baggage claim, transportation, and exits in the provision of limited customer service
· request assistance for travelers in emergency situations, including medical emergencies
ALL SPECIALTIES
· make minor repairs on building fixtures and equipment
· understand and follow oral and written instructions and to keep simple records and make reports
· exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of surfaces and locations
GENERAL SPECIALTY
· assign and oversee the work of subordinates and to train and instruct employees in cleaning and custodial operations
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 7/18.)
AIRPORT SPECIALTY:
EDUCATION:
Education equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.
EXPERIENCE:
Six months of experience as a Custodial Worker 1 at the Airport.
GENERAL SPECIALTY:
EDUCATION:
Education equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.
AND
EXPERIENCE:
One year of experience in mopping and scrubbing floors, waxing and polishing floors and furniture, etc.
Any equivalent combination of training and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND REGISTRATIONS
AIRPORT SPECIALTY ONLY: Employees must be able to pass and maintain Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) and Airfield Operations Area (AOA) clearance.
