CUSTODIAL WORKER 1

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

          This is routine manual work in the custodial care of public institutional buildings and surrounding grounds.  Depending on the department, employees in this class in the General Specialty may be assigned to work as a laundry worker. Employees in the Airport Specialty perform custodial work and limited customer service work.  For employees in the Airport Specialty, employees learn to provide information or directions to the information desk, amenities, restrooms, baggage claim, transportation, and exits, and to report damages and security concerns.  Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a higher level custodial or other supervisor and may involve some disagreeable conditions.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

AIRPORT SPECIALTY

 

          Washes and sanitizes lavatories and restocks disposables; sweeps and mops floors and vacuums carpets; disposes trash; climbs step ladders to clean elevated areas.

          May perform heavy sanitizing duties affiliated with night shift routines; may shovel snow from the sidewalk areas; moves or lifts chairs or other heavy items as needed.

          Learns to provide travelers and members of the public with information about or directions to the information desk, amenities, restrooms, baggage claim, transportation, and exits; conducts safety and security scans of assigned areas for cleaning.

          Learns to identify and report safety and security concerns in the performance of custodial duties.

          Reports damages to maintenance staff.

          Requests assistance for travelers, and other individuals, in emergency situations, including medical emergencies.

 

GENERAL SPECIALTY

 

Custodial Assignment:

 

          Mops, sweeps, vacuums, and scrubs floors; waxes and polishes floors and furniture; dusts furniture; cleans and polishes brass; cleans lavatories and replaces lavatory supplies; disposes of waste paper and trash; wipes walls down and spot cleans walls; climbs step ladders to reach and clean elevated areas; cleans other areas as needed.

          Cuts grass, trims hedges, removes snow and ice, sweeps and cleans walkways, and assists in keeping outside premises in an orderly condition; replaces light bulbs; makes simple repairs to buildings and equipment; repairs and adjusts cleaning equipment; reports damage to structures and equipment; reports damage to structures and equipment that require repairs; moves furniture and equipment; delivers and restocks supplies; runs errands; serves as guard or night watchman as an incidental assignment.

 

Laundry Assignment:

 

          Handles soiled/clean laundry in accordance with established departmental procedures, including but not limited to counting and sorting incoming and outgoing laundry; checks attached laundry slips; notes discrepancies; sorts soiled clothing by hand; washes, presses and folds laundry by operating washing machines, extractors, dryers, flatwork ironers and folding machines; presses garments with a steam press unit or hand iron; returns folded laundry to proper sorting and/or storage areas; folds dried clothing by hand; may keep records of laundry operations.

Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

·           the materials, methods, practices and cleaning solutions used in custodial cleaning operations if required by assignment

·           the operation and care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines and other janitorial equipment if required by assignment

·           the operation of laundry machines including washers, tumblers, steam presses, and flatwork ironers if required by assignment

·           necessary safety precautions used in the performance of custodial work

 

AIRPORT SPECIALTY

 

·       the floorplan and layout of Airport facilities

 

ABILITY TO:

 

ALL SPECIALTIES:

 

·          understand and follow simple oral and written instructions

·           make minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment

·           exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces

·           work in a standing position under conditions of low or high temperature and humidity if required by assignment

·           operate vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines and other janitorial equipment if required by assignment

·           learn the operation of laundry machines including washers, tumblers, steam presses, and flatwork ironers if required by assignment

·           learn the safety precautions necessary in laundry operations if required by assignment

·          work harmoniously with fellow workers and others

·          read and write English

 

AIRPORT SPECIALTY:

 

·       communicate basic information about location of Airport information desks, amenities, restrooms, baggage claim, transportation, and exits in the provision of limited customer service

·       request assistance for travelers in emergency situations, including medical     emergencies

 

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.  Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 7/18.)

 

ALL SPECIALTIES:

 

EDUCATION:

 

          Education equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade.

         

AND

 

EXPERIENCE:

 

AIRPORT SPECIALTY:

 

Successful completion of a five-month workforce development program administered by the City of Philadelphia Office of Workforce Development in Custodial Service and Customer Service.

 

GENERAL SPECIALTY:

 

Six months of experience performing custodial work, such as mopping and scrubbing floors, waxing and polishing floors and furniture, and related duties or performing laundry work in a commercial or institutional laundry.

 

OR

 

          Any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

          Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

 

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND REGISTRATIONS

 

          AIRPORT SPECIALTY ONLY:  Employees must be able to pass and maintain Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) and Airfield Operations Area (AOA) clearance.

 

Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Common­wealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of employment, if required by work assignment.
