This is routine work driving and operating the less complex types of automotive equipment. Employees in this class operate single chassis automotive equipment which may involve the operation of pedals and levers to control accessory equipment which has a limited number of controls and which works through a limited range of possible movements non- simultaneously with the basic vehicle. Work may include light or heavy physical labor when not driving equipment to or operating it at the work site.

Work is performed under the close supervision of a Crew Chief. Work assignments are limited in nature and are carried out in accordance with instructions and established routines. Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of equipment to provide a variety of services. Work involves conditions which can only be partially controlled.

• Operates trucks collecting refuse; drives slowly along streets while laborer walking beside truck picks up refuse and loads it in the vehicle.
• Operates dump trucks hauling sand and other loose materials on highway construction projects.
• Operates trucks for purposes such as spreading cinders or salt on icy roads, and hauling materials from storage yards and warehouses to other locations; helps load and unload trucks.
• Drives farm-type tractors with grass cutting and other common towed or pushed attachments.
• Washes and services trucks with water, gas and oil; observes instruments while vehicle is in operation and takes routine corrective measures if malfunction is indicated; performs first echelon maintenance.
• Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION

• Ability to read and write English.

• Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

• Possession of a valid Class B - Commercial Drivers License (CDL) issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to the scheduled examination and during tenure of employment in the class.
